Had to put my dog down Monday. With the thousands of animals I have caught commercial fishing I have never mad one hurt like making the decision I had to make at the vet Monday. Every time I come home I quickly shut the gate but no one is there to escape.

We never think about it, but vet checks are important. Dog are valuable tools.

a vet friend of mine used to give doses of heartworm prevention to the person who brought in the first mosquito of the year. and tape it up and let everyone know it was time start heart worm meds

when we would have a warm day in February and gave mosquitoes active he decided year round was the way to go

heart worm med year round now is worth the investment because we have so much vested in our dogs

sorry yours got them

Dang that sucks. So many things that can claim our 4 leged friends. Wife had to make that decision not all that long ago as well. her's got an incurable disease from the back water they still have no cure or vaccine for.

It was a long time ago but my lab had heart worms. We had just come back from a duck hunting trip to Manitoba. That dog preformed like champ. But once home I could see there was something wrong with his eyes so off the vet we go. Barron had heart worms in his eyes. And of course his heart was loaded with them. They said they could treat him but I decided to have him put down.
The bad thing about the whole thing was instead of putting him down right away they kept him caged up for weeks while vets from all over the state poked and prodded him. I guess Barron was one of the first cases of heart worm In the state. I was not a happy camper when I found out.
As I sit here typing this I'm all teared up.
The vet still has that jar with Barron's heart. I don't know how that dog worked those ducks for a week with his heart loaded with worms. He never missed a retrieve.

We don’t see much HW disease in PA, usually it’s from dogs who travel, sometimes shelter pets who have been transferred. We have treated a few successfully, particularly a Great Pyrenees. She did well because she was already a calm dog. Part of the treatment is strict rest. I’ve seen a couple HW positive cats. A lady who lives near a river had two test positive. Cats can clear it sometimes because of the macrophages, they run through the blood like Pac-Man and they can clear them but that causes so much inflammation that they often pass away from secondary heart issues.
I’m awful sorry for your loss. It hurts so much, I know.

Dogs are part of the family. It is always a horrible to have to make that decision.

Ivomec is cheap. For many years, I gave my hounds Ivomec once a month year round. Now it's twice a month 1st and 15th.

So sorry to hear this. I am going through a nightmare at this time with my dog. First week of april he started to vomit over and over. Then had a bloody stool. Took him to the vet they said Pancratius. Gave him some pro biotics and pain killers. That night had what we thought was a seizure. Then started having them more often. Last Sunday took him to the ER and 4,000$ later he is on phenobarbital, He is worse then ever. Can't stand or walk now and wife wants to take him to a neurologist to get an mri of his brain. He is my shadow and follows me everywhere. Its killing him and I and our bank at the same time. He just turned 9, most loyal dog I ever had.

We just wormed the plantation dogs. Ivermectin covers it and it’s fairly cheap to do, especially when there’s a kennel full!
