I see photos of guys with traps set on tops of roofs. I can see where this would be very helpful and necessary in some situations. My question is, how do you anchor a trap to a shingled roof or a metal roof or vinyl siding or other material without creating a hole that will leak? I am afraid to mess with a roof and then get a call after the next rainstorm telling me I made their roof leak. Any tips??

It's rare to need to anchor on a roof top, but sometimes under a dormer is needed. I try to put any screws far enough under the dormer soffit where the roof doesn't get wet. All screw holes get black roofing sealant. I don't worry much about a couple screw holes in vinyl siding, they aren't too visible from the ground. The animal usually does much more damage than we do solving the problem. Protect the roof as much as possible from the caught animal with screen or plywood under the traps. Use kill traps when possible.

I have several rooftops right now, here’s one for squirrels. Some of you might not have to deal with gutters

The fence picket has a 2x4 stapled to it that fits into the gutter.

Also I just did a job with a Polly trap on the roof, easier to not have a coon pull shingles into the trap. Just protect in front of trap. This one did a number on this roof.

Plywood under the trap if we cage trap. Zip ties screwed into the plywood so traps can be easily swapped out.

It’s often easier to not use live traps.
