Dr Ed Ashby. Studies were done on African game.
Heavy arrows work ok, but I'm more of a believer on midweight for best overall performance. Of course, cut on contact broad heads of your choice. That's it ! Thank you ! Yeah I'm still trying to learn all this stuff . Got a feeling a lot of this may not apply to me due to my draw weight and length. Shoot 65# with my compound and feel really comfortable but my recurve is 55# and I feel decently over bowed so probably gonna jump doing to some 45# limbs. So not sure a massively heavy arrow with do too good on that That being said the guy I talked to said he went though a stage where he was shooting 80 lbs with really heavy arrows said they would punch though about anything he wanted and if was within 20yd it was dead. But he moved away from it. Think he's more of a mid weight guy now. Anyhow just wanted to look into this guy and seems this going to be pretty interesting. Listening to a little seminar of his right now and so far *Building and tuning a arrow is the same as building and tuning a load for a rifle * yeaahhh.... Really got my attention more Should be a cool bit of listening ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/05/full-34110-217246-screenshot_20240506_170252.png) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/05/full-34110-217247-screenshot_20240506_170304.png) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/05/full-34110-217248-screenshot_20240506_170308.png) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/05/full-34110-217249-screenshot_20240506_170316.png)

Ashby archery.
If you plan hunting white tail deer, the heavy arrow studies are a bit over the top. Just put a sharp broadhead on your arrow, sharp being the important part.
There is a lot of heavy arrow talk in the compound bow space. I tend to think this way. Take a 100 mph 4x4 post, or a 200 mph pool cue to the chest, either way you have problem. The pool cue just has flatter trajectory. Well I'm getting into arrow building slowly to go along with my reloading so just doing the deal to listen to a few different sides to kinda see what would make sense. Probably will do what I usually do. Build a few of these see what they do, build some of these see what happens , end up with some mixture what works well for me. probably just gonna be shooting hogs....when they actually return, Haven seen any in the last year or so on my properties and I think there might be a lil something to Ashby's way of thinking for them vs white tail.....not sure yet though Funny dead is you reminded me of something. Was with my dog hunting buddy one day and we went over to some.guys he knew. Archery season has just started. Go to talking and they mentioned one of there guys couldn't find the deer they shot. Said him and his dang "elephant arrow". Asked shine wahy they mean and apparently the guy built and used super heavy weight arrows out of his compound. Think they said like 700gr ? Been a few years can't quite remember . Said that out of his 80# bow would let him take most shots he'd get and it would usually punch through whatever lil white tail was under him..... Not that I'm looking to do that hair find it interesting

There is a lot of evidence that disputes Ashby's findings. Very controversial.
Dave Holt shoots 150+ animals a year in Africa and he thinks Ashby is a complete idiot. (His words) BernieB, Didn't I read that Dave Holt was found guilty of Fraud, lying, perjury, and was found to be guilty of charges defrauding his own Brothers in Blue, in April 2008? Criminal charges against someone, defrauding his own Police Brothers is not someone I'd personally support nor find to be Trustworthy. I have absolutely zero faith in a proven criminal.

You beat me to it. BUT...you are 100% correct on ol' Davey Holt. Using him as an example for anyting other than a bad example is all he is good for.

Shot a broadhead target with a self bow I made from hedge. Knapped obsidian arrowhead. About 20 yards. Son in law shot same target same distance with a compound and broad head. He was using carbon arrows and I used a birch dowel rod with turkey feathers, Everything tied on with wet sinew then allowed to dry. His arrow penetrated about 3 inchs more. Both could have been lethal. Thats the bottom line isn't it? Will it fill your freezer?
