I have a friend, Marty, he has a job that had him in Africa so much that he bought a house to stay in over there. Loves to trad hunt and has killed a museum full of critters. He hammered an elephant with a 100# longbow and an arrow that was stupid heavy. Didn't get a pass through but drove that 30+" arrows in past the nock and either took out a rib or part of one. Heavy arrow is all physics, sit down with an equation and some known data and you can figure out the optimum arrow weight for your set up and then build your arrows to that spec. Warning, there is a rabbit hole/maze that you can get lost in with archery and physics Kinetic energy, front of center balance, etc From what I have seen you post about guns and reloading I think it would interest you

When talking arrow weight a good rule of thumb that is also very time-tested is simply this, 9-10 grains per pound of draw weight. I don't care if it's through attaining high FOC or the shaft materials themselves.

Here is a bit of personal experience. I have an osage selfbow I made around 1999 that pulls about 57 pounds at my 27” draw length. Ive taken around 40 deer with it. The first 15 or 20 of those were with arrows cut 28-1/2” long weighing about 550 grains. none were complete pass throughs. At some point I became interested in studying different cultures and their archery kits that are used primarily for hunting (the short bow’s and arrows associated with historic Native American cultures are primarily for warfare, but that is a different subject)…) Anyway I noticed most archery kits being used primarily for making meat had loooong bows and looong heavy arrows. So I decided to try that out. I made arrows of split timber hickory and grey dogwood shoots that were 34 to 36 inches long (not a typo) and weighed between 850-1000 grains. The next deer I shot, a 130 pound doe, left the arrow stuck in the ground under it and didnt go very far. So i washed the blood off it, put a new flint point on it because the rock hit a rib on exit side and broke, and put it back in my quiver. I killed 4 deer with that same shaft because every single one was a complete pass through and the shaft was undamaged. Had to replace a fletch after the third because it was getting ratty. On the fourth one it hit another rib and broke the second flint point so I put another point on it and retired it. Shaft is still straight, and maybe someday I will try for number 5. And here is another thing I noticed about very heavy arrows - they are dead quiet. They are slow, but it doesnt matter because the sound is so natural and quiet that the deer dont jump the string like with faster louder setups. When I did miss, I started getting second shots because the deer did not spook. Thats my experience for whatever it is worth to you. There is one downside, and that is trajectory. I keep my shots under 20 yards. But thats how I like it, that is one of the reasons why I bowhunt - its about getting close and using equipment I made myself, not seeing how far I can shoot. That said, I also respect and appreciate the long range specialist and amazing skill of shooting like that. My way is just what I personally like for bowhunting.

There is a lot of evidence that disputes Ashby's findings. Very controversial.
Dave Holt shoots 150+ animals a year in Africa and he thinks Ashby is a complete idiot. (His words) BernieB, Didn't I read that Dave Holt was found guilty of Fraud, lying, perjury, and was found to be guilty of charges defrauding his own Brothers in Blue, in April 2008? Criminal charges against someone, defrauding his own Police Brothers is not someone I'd personally support nor find to be Trustworthy. I have absolutely zero faith in a proven criminal. you sure that's the same Dave Holt? I know nothing about any of that. Even if it was true I don't see how it has anything to do with the subject.

Are you knapping your own broadheads? Yes. I have retired from commercial knapping, but in those days I was supplying them to 3 Rivers Archery and other individuals. If you ever watched Tred Barta hunt with stone, I made those arrows. Well actually he sent me fletched shafts and I made and mounted the points on them for him. I am a prime example of why it is dangerous to make a hobby a business. Haven’t chipped stone for fun in a long time. Although it has been long enough now that I don’t mind making a blade now and then, I only do it when I actually need something. It has been 5 years now since I deer hunted. Wife and 7 year old dont seem to like the meat, and my drive to hunt seems to have changed. My son has started saying he wants to hunt, and I took my first shot at a deer with a bow when I was 8, so I think its time to start playing bows and arrows again…

Then some kid at my son’s school shot a deer when he was about 11 or 12 and mine wanted to try it. So I borrowed the rifle I’d killed my first deer with from my dad and that created a monster, lol! He’s 27 now with a P&Y and B&C under his belt already. We’re even talking about trying traditional archery…bows only though, lol!! Hope you get back into it and post some pics!!

I shoot 460 grain arrows out of 30#. These arrows have 300 grains up front. They fly perfectly and the bow is very quiet. Also they penetrate farther into my Block target than a 300 grain arrow with 125 grains up front.
