It was on a hot August day in 1872 (three years before this photo was made) that a band of Comanches came to the Burleson Ranch in Brown County, Texas to steal horses. They concealed themselves at Dowdy's Creek and watched John Burleson round up some cattle and leave on a cattle drive. His wife was left at their pole cabin with the children, and proceeded to do her chores. After a while she heard the wild animal noises that the Indians were making, and immediatly knew she would have to defend against an attack. She made sure they saw her loading her shotgun. Then shook her fist at them, daring them to come out in the open. ( When she was 61, she told the full story in 1911 to Marvin Hunter of the Frontier Times and it was eventually published in the June 1938 edition)

Not much joy in their faces, in all the old photos I have of my family the people look old, no matter their age. Life was hard in the Ozarks and anywhere rural back then.

In most of those old photos, it seems they look sadly sober. Compared to today, those were tough times.

It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.

Those Indians understood what every man across all races knows: Do not mess with a woman with a shotgun in her hands.

True, but with those old time cameras, you had to sit still for several minutes for the image to set. Try smiling for that long. LOL

If she was 61 years old in 1911 she was 22 at the time of the Indian confrontation. Probably married at 14 or 15 judging by the size of the older children in the 1875 picture when she was 25. The 20 something "girls" protesting on today's college campuses couldn't last a day in this woman's shoes. How much the human race has softened physically and mentally.
