At the rate of inflation these days I think it's hard to justify having much cash. A year or two of income is a lot of money to be decreasing. Every morning you wake up it's worth less than it was the day before. Some cash is a good idea, but I question the wisdom of having more than 10K or so.

For those who say you should purchase assets, what would you suggest? Looking for things that do not depreciate and could be liquidated quickly in the event of an emergency.

Sounds like you need to find yourself a 'good fiduciary' financial and tax advisor to create a balanced portfolio for retirement!

Where did you get 5.25? Most I could get was 4.85 2 days ago.

There are better places for your money than cash that do not involve the stock market. You can buy mutual funds based on fed treasury bills (with less than 1 yr maturity) currently paying 5.26% that can be sold at any time for what you paid for them (and keep the interest paid out). The principle is guaranteed but the rate is not. You can expect the rate paid to track with the prime rate set by the federal reserve in that a .25% cut in the prime rate will result in a .25% cut in the rate paid by the fund. If you have funds that you don't want to invest in a stock market at an all time high you are at least staying a couple of % ahead of inflation instead of having cash that is decreasing in vaue at the inflation rate. Talk with your financial advisor.

Lately I have been moving cash to old farm equipment, fertilizer and seed. Hope to have enough left over to invest in a couple weeks hunting this fall. Anything left over is a bonus.

Had a 32% return in a Prudential variable universal life policy over last 12 months. Hard to do if you are in cash. My cash value grew over $100K, as did the death benefit. Sweet.

If something bad happens and banks shut down and you need money…how are you getting it? Credit and debit cards will be worthless. Cash will be king at that point. Yes I have a retirement and 401K, but if I can’t get to it then it does me NO good. All our cash stretches back years. Income tax returns, those government checks they were sending out, trapping and thermal money, selling unused items, etc.
We just decided to start saving some cash for those unexpected moments. Our initial goal was $5K. We reached that and decided to try for $10K and once that was reached we kept upping our goal. We took the first $50K and put it in a CD. We kept on and it got to be a race, lol. Now we have enough if I missed work for a year unpaid we wouldn’t miss a beat.
Don’t get me wrong, we still enjoy life. I still buy things and so does the wife. Every year if there’s leftover we start making some donations. Nothing extravagant, just a little here and there. We find a young family in need and give them a nice Christmas. My kids are all taken care of, taught them early to not rely on anyone but themselves. The wife and I joke with them when they start talking about inheritance. We tell them we will be able to tell them the month we pass away…when we’ve spent all the money, lol. We live very modestly, but comfortably. We buy quality and it lasts. My old Ford just hit 468K miles. Still shooting a 2000 model bow.

Yes cash may be decreasing, but if you wake up tomorrow and the government has froze everything and shut everything down what will you do? How long will you last?

There are money market accounts through financial advisers paying 5.3 percent and you can write checks out of the account. Our credit union has 5.3 percent CDs for 11 months. A friend sold a duplex and put 200k in savings at .20 I told him about the cd but he ignored me and year later I told you just through $10,000 in the toilet. Keeping large amount of cash is just throwing money away. Some cash yes but a years salary not a good idea. I’ve been waiting for the big crash for 40 years. If I’d gone the no financial institution route I’d be a financial mess.

Just put the cash in the wheelbarrow and park it in the garage by the car out of the rain. Save it for a rainy day in case you need a loaf of bread. Thieves would rather have it so they can get it electronic transfer.

I keep all of mine buried on the North side of the outhouse. If anyone wants to dig for it they can be my guest. Please keep the sides of the hole straight and at least 4 feet deep. I am sure that is where I buried it. Pretty sure.

I have nothing clever to put here.
