Being in the Great Cage State of Massachusetts i was wondering if any of you guys out there have ever cage trapped Mink on a serious level, what is your approach with bait and location? I have never really messed with them exclusively but have caught probably 30 over thr years in my fisher cages along some of the small creeks i set. Just wanted to picks some brains of people more experienced with this than i am?
Up for Monster Tom,,,He is a bette rtype..............
Think inside the box
You have to forget it is a cage and set the areas you would naturally. If you are new to mink, watch a good yuck tube channel on conventional sets and think if a cage would work at the location. (maybe with effort or modification to the terrain or the trap) Double door traps are like setting any pass thew set.
We have a 1 day live set check 3 day on non live sets
Think inside the water
Modify your floating sets to release the trap into the water, creating a three day check Do the same to your bridge abutment sets Colony traps produce a by catch,,,,,aka Ondatra zibethicus

Think if I had to do it I'd just use a lot of double doors and run them the same way your run a coin. I make these an think they would work. Not hard to mod a colony trap into something similar either
Thanks guys for your input! We have a very healthy mink population here and I would like to take advantage of that by combining mink cages along with my fisher cages at a multitude of my locations
There is no requirement here to cage trap mink but I have caged a few. They will readily go in a baited cage just the same as they go in a baited box set with a 120 or foothold..
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
When it comes to mink, a cage is just a wire wrapped cubby. I use 6x9x24 cages or something close for most of my mink trapping. A piece of fish, muskrat or beaver wired to the back with a little grass covering to keep the birds out. I mostly trap canal bottoms after the bulk of the water is turned off or free flowing creeks. I put the door on the downstream side and tee stake it to keep coons from moving them.

Stud,,,,,
Trap always down stream,,,,except in an eddie,,,,,this is because it is hard to shop when swimming with the current almost a second chance

Wolfdog from what I see a mink could probably waltz through that trigger many times before touching wire enough to set it off. I would feel much better having a platform for his feet/body weight to set it off.

Made them long enough for you to manipulate them to different shapes. Figure if you can catch them in conies with wire triggers should be able to with wire trigger cages lol. That being said I do have foot treddel ones
