Hi! How's it going?!

I'm inquiring what is the fertilizer that you like the best on your potato plants given that they like higher amounts of potassium? I have about 60 hills in various stages of growth up on an organic farm. The fertilizer doesn't have to be organic because where the spuds are planted are not part of his active fields but if it was og, that would be a plus.

I used the stuff pictured below last year. Nice amount of K but at $15 for 2 1/2 pounds fairly expensive per application. I got my first round of fertilization done
using some organic chicken manure based product but its low in K. I'd like to smack the plants in the first half of June with some higher K stuff.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome...

May not help this seasons spuds, as yours are growing. But I plan next years garden while tending this years garden. I scatter wood ashes all winter in the area I plan to plant next years spuds, I use manure in the fall also, covered with a layer of leaves. The manure breaks down well before spuds form, (avoids scabby spuds) from fresher manure. Deep till so soil is loose. Trying to hill up spuds only once after planting in shallow furrow. Hilling spuds several times has not really been woth the effort for me.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

I put on a generous amount of composted sheep manure on my whole garden in the fall and work that i once with our tractor powered 5 foot rotortiller. I then work that again with the big rotortiller and then use my 20 inch rear tined tiller to do the fine work. I also use 10-10-10 like others. I use a hoe and make a shallow trench along the rows and put the fertilizer in that trench, This gives the plants some quick start nutrient whie the temps rise more to break down the nutrients in the compost. In a 30 foot row I use about 2lbs. or maybe a bit more or less.

Sulfur. I put my cut spuds into a bucket pour in a bag of sulfur and give them a good shake to get them dusted. This helps prevent rot. Any extra sulfur gets spread down the row. This does double duty as both a fungicide anti rot and soil acidififier. Spuds prefer more acid than the rest of the veggies and my garden has been limed to make it sweet.

Triple ten is what I side dress with at each hilling, and I'll hill them three times when they get six inches of growth.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!!

I probably should have set up the situation a bit more as this is more "swidden agriculture" than a permanent garden, except no burning is involved.

My organic farmer friend is often trying new things and for some reason x number of years ago, he laid down a layer of sawdust x inches deep between his pasture fence and his larger field's "field road". There's about 25 feet of space between them and the length is about 400-500 yards in length. The width of the sawdust cover was about 15 feet wide. I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish with that action (he had some Scottish Highlander cattle in the pasture at that time) but in a number of places the grasses and weeds haven't totally come back to cover the sawdust so in these open spots I could work areas with a hoe or shovel depending on what I was planting.

In 2022, I had a patch of pumpkins but expanded to a number of things last year, including some potatoes. Being next to the field trail, it was fairly easy to water from my vehicle, and the last two years were drought years so that was helpful. The larger length of spud hills this year is in a new sport further south towards the township gravel road. A smaller patch is where I had some pumpkins last year. There isn't any real "permanence" to any of these locations. So far smile
