Are there any coin collectors out there?
If so what is the most valuable coin you have or sold?

I have fun with my dad
He/ we grew up dirt poor

As thing got thicker, I noticed my dad always picking up coins on the ground
Any change
I would drop coins when I got older to see if he could find them .....

Long Story short,,,,, In early days of IA ,,,guessing 1948,,,someone move out and dropped coins in the dirt on the driveway of the Aspenwall Farm
He found them,,,,very young....

You don't see many .50 cent pieces anymore.

I stopped at a fast food drive thru. When I went to pay for my order, I gave the young lady some change which included a .50 cent piece. She smiled and said, "What is this?" As though I was trying to pull a fast one.
I told her it was a .50 cent piece, a half dollar. I don't think she believed me. To convince her, I told her to check with her manager if she didn't believe me. She did and came back and said she never knew there was such a coin. I wonder how she'd react if someone gave her a silver dollar?

Got a gift from my brother. It was 3 AA batteries with a note that said, Gift Not Included.

I have a stack of new, uncirculated $2 bills with consecutive serial numbers. I am hoping in 50 years they may be worth $2.50 each.

I used to get a handful of Susan B's when I cashed my paycheck just to watch the checkout clerks go nuts when I spent them. LOL

I have some older coins I found metal detecting such as Barber & Mercury dimes, V nickels, Indian Head pennies, and a few Standing Liberties.

I dont collect coins but have a jar full of old coins that my uncle gave me that he dug up on his farm over the years.
There are some from the 1700's and the oldest I think is 1605.

Mostly silver dollars. I think probably one of those would be the most expensive coins I own. I see some are worth a lot now.

My Grandmother went to see Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show when she was a kid. The admission was an Indian head penny. That got me started in collecting - especially when she gave me an Indian head penny!
I like silver half dollars. My favorites are the one from Albany with a beaver on it and the one from Stone Mountain Georgia with Stonewall Jackson and General Lee on it.

Just passin through

In the early 1900's at the top of the mountain (well it is elevation of 1600 feet, its a mountain around here) near home lived an old lady named Nancy Rutan. She would always say when she was ready to die she would "go jump in the mine hole". That was an old mine on the mountain that is filled near to the top with water. In the summer of 1914 she disappeared. My grandfather was part of the search party that looked for her but she was never seen again.
Fast forward to 1986. I was turkey hunting and came upon the stone foundation of her house. I had seen it many times before. Sitting at the base of a tree a few yards from the foundation I made a few calls but received no return gobbles. Going to stand up I noticed the bottom of a glass jar. The glass had bubbles in it so I figured it was old. The jar was upside down what I had seen was the bottom. Taking care not to break it I dug it up from the dirt and tree roots. A zinc topped Mason jar, Patent November 30, 1858 containing a silver dollar and an Indian head penny.
Returning home I showed the jar and contents to my grandfather. He looked at it for a few seconds then said he was "stunned". He said that the last person to see Nancy alive was Mr. Truax the owner of the general store in Beemerville. A week before she was known to be missing she had purchased some supplies at the store with a 5 dollar gold piece and had told Mr. Truax that was the last of her money. He had told the searchers he gave her a silver dollar and a penny in change.
The silver dollar (1881) and the Indian head penny may not be worth much but to me they are priceless.
Paper now inside the jar is a note in my grandmothers handwriting telling this story.

There’s a cool little general store in new market,va that gives out 50 cent pieces as change. I collect coins for fun not monetary value. I’m sure you could collect valuable coins and sell them for a profit
