I misunderstood. I thought you meant for back up. Big boar backed up against something and you have to shoot between dogs, the precision of a scope would be very handy.

I had a gp100 in 357, my dad has a Redhawk 44 mag 10.5" barrel. I have a Blackhawk now. All excellent guns, Wheel guns are heavy, for black bear a Redhawk 44 mag would fit the bill, if using hounds, may as well practice with your new gun and use it on your hunt. I would.

Most likely bear will be in a tree with dogs below, a falling bear will be the most likely hazard to the dogs

10mm is on par with 357 mag. A bit anemic for a bear. For protection it works
, but not as the weapon you intend to use to harvest a bear. I look at my Blackhawk as a rifle that fits on my waist. Yes it's a bit heavy, I don't carry it when I have a rifle in my hand, but I do when I'm metal detecting or hunting with a shotgun.

I shot my only bear in the UP of Michigan with a Smith Model 29 44 mag. It went thirty feet and collapsed. I had a Super Blackhawk that I shot in a metallic silhouette league and it performed well.

The super redhawk in 454 Casull is really nice, but as heavy as your 30/30 and not nearly as easy to shoot fast and accurately. Most guides are very leery about allowing a client to shoot a bear on the ground with their dogs anyways, and would be even more so with a pistol. For shooting in a tree it would be fine, and in that situation a scope is more accurate. what I carry all the time for backup bear hunting is a Taurus Ultralite in 44 magnum. Super light and comfortable to pack, with the excellent grip on it, is even comfortable to shoot, unlike the Smith Ultralite with wood grips I tried.

True twobit. But not always.

Yes of course. Nothing more distracting than a guy screaming at you "don't shoot my dog" while You're waiting for the broadside shot and clear background. If anyone wants to go on a cheap black bear hunt with a very high success rate, northern California is packed full of bears. Go up to tedoc, I run into no less than 3 in a weekend hunt. One time I ran into 5 on a morning walk. I always see hogs and bears before I see deer. Anywhere north of Redding is overrun by bears.

I carried a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag with 7.5 inch barrel all over Alaska as bear deterrent. I kept it loaded with Buffalo Bore 340 gr +p+ hard cast ammo. It was a good gun. I'd have preferred the .454 but the .44 mag was what I could find used at a good price. If I ever move back to Alaska I'd get a Glock in 10mm auto. My uses were for back up and protection though. It was accurate and I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a deer or black bear with it at close range. It's a solid gun.

I like the Ruger, one thing about revolvers is to make sure the grips fit your hands correctly.

Nvwrangler, you say you have a Blackhawk in 45 colt, you are more than good to go on black bears with good hand loads.
