Not something I would want to deal with. I've handled several rabid animals , bats , raccoons. Lab tested.

But a bear ? Big nope. Don't want to get near that or even a close gunshot to put it down. I would want some distance after shooting something like that. Large biohazard area.

Any large predator with rabies is dangerous.
A few years back a resident near Matheson reported a rabid wolf in their yard.
A woman cop drove up and the wolf immediately furiously attacked the cop car biting and flattening 3 tires before the cop shot it out of the window from inside the car.
A rabid bear could potentially be very dangerous.

for those that go out with 5 rounds or less in pocket and gun combined , are you rethinking your round count if there are rabid bears?

If you get killed by a rabid black bear, your number is up.
Must be right up there with one of the most unlikely ways to kick out.

I think I would keep it to box fed or tube fed the belts flopping around and getting dirty cause issues

it is still a low chance but a loaded spare mag and 10 rounds in a wallet in a coat pocket seems like not too much weight to carry.

Is there a reason why rabies shots are so ridiculously expensive over there? Here, a box of 5 rabies vaccine doses costs $25 (few pharmacies carry it, nevertheless it's available). You can get the post-exposure shots for free in any state clinic 24/7, or pay something like $100 to 150 for the whole series of shots to have it done in a comfortable private clinic (regardless of whether you're a Russian citizen or not). You can also get pre-exposure shots for free, but this usually requires setting up an appointment and a short wait.

Our healthcare system is seriously broken , has been for many years.
Something you don't want to be , number 1 in costs by far.

Sadly , you would think with the crazy costs here for healthcare , it would be among the best. No , worldwide we rate about #15 in quality of care.

I have read that the rabies virus in a dead animal does not survive once the carcass has cooled to ambient temperature. If so, scavenging seems an unlikely source for bears, wolves, ect to contract rabies.

which is why it probably isn't much worse

but you have to figure a few get there before the carcass has cooled

To reiterate: Any Veteran can get the pre-exposure rabies shot free or at low cost at any VAMC, Very cheap insurance for trappers.
You might have to argue a bit, ask for a patients advocate or a Vet Rep for help. Tell them you handle wild animals, and NEED the shots.
