Found this mushroom in the yard today. Growing out of an old tree stump. Not sure what type of tree. The stump was old and rotten when we bought the place. About 3 inches tall, 4 inches across.

Every match looks like it comes in later summer. Sweetbread mushroom, sweating mushroom ( poison!), peppery milky, white leucopax. I’ll have to read more. I just got this book used on eBay and I’m enthralled at all the different mushrooms!!!

Hopefully Tatiana will be along soon. I'm in awe of her fungi knowledge.

I wish I was better at mycology. A friend of one my best friends is a mycologist. Before he moved, about once a year he would do a woods walk and identification in my friend's woods. I went whenever I could. There's a lot of edible mushrooms in my area, that I am just not confident enough in my ability to correctly identify them to eat.

The only ones I harvest are morels, field mushrooms, pheasant backs/dryad's saddles, puffballs, lions mane, hen of the woods, chantrelles and chicken of the woods.

The type of wood that a mushroom grows out of matters. I'm no expert so I don't pick any mushrooms that look like that. Chanterelles, matsutake, chicken of the woods, oyster are all easily identified. Boletes and morels are also easy to identify if you are aware of the look alikes and the less edible varieties

I have a book of mushrooms of Missouri and I won't eat half the edible ones because of look alikes. A spore print is the safe bet.

And don't ask me how to do a spore print. That's just what the book says

Right like do you put ink on it?!? Then how are you supposed to eat it? Always wondered that too

And one thing to remember, is even if you're sure that you have an edible species, the first time you have any just eat a tiny amount to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction. I tell all my customers at the farmers market this when it comes to wild mushrooms that I pick and sell.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
