I've caught and shot coyotes for over 60 years. Never have been a volume trapper like the big boys, but at least a few every year. Last season, because of medical problems, I didn't get a single one. Kinda sad...really hurts gettin' old. Here's some more portraits from years gone by.

I found that saving and cleaning the claws brought pretty good money.

Even though they're all the same, there are subtle face differences in each coyote.

This is a summer coyote with poor pelt quality.

I suspect in the winter, this coyote had a fairly nice pelt.

Here's another picture of a pretty handsome dog.

I'm hoping Sharon will grace this post with some more of her coyote art. You other guys too!

Jack

Every year I say I’m going to spend more time photographing coyotes but stars just don’t seem to line up. Few pics that I’ve posted here before.

Pretty scraggly up here. Only ever caught one a d that was out near Ruby.
See guys on here reporting mange when the yotes are numerous. F&G wildlife disease lady here in Fbks says there's never been a documented case of mange in Alaska. That surprised me!

Great shots, everyone. Coyotes are so different according to the habitat and region . In weight and colours. Always learning.

Jack.

I began to be immersed in the book you gave me,The Island Within, from your friend Nels. Astounding how detailed in thought he was. And more astounding in some of the types of wondering he had. I'm in the beginning of the book and caught in his delightfully refreshing descriptions and illustrations , his way of describing events . He makes a movie in words that I can see clearly as I go along. Even describing in detail of my favorite trees, Hemlock and Cedar. One example of his thought patterns in illustration I loved, of a deer moving, " He twists to one side and vaults across a series of deadfalls , absolutely noiseless , drifting like a moth over the forest floor at dusk " ...and that is just one of many examples. His illustrations and descriptions of many things put him in a realm of his own. So refreshing for me.

I never dreamed anyone else had some of the thoughts in questions that I have had, but when he described some of the very same sentiments , my jaw dropped in amazement. I find myself only able to read segments at a time, then pondering on them a while , before continuing. Some paragraphs I need to re read a couple of times, to digest the import of his meaning. Im only on chapter one. I saved this book for when I could really devote quiet time to begin the story.

Thank you, Jack, for thinking of me for this one. It hits home in ways I never imagined, nor would admit to many people.

I think his place in life, being in between as his culture, not trying to become someone else that he wasn't, was a great combo of indigenous and his own scientific blend that made him very unique.
