Went and made a few sets yesterday morning. When I got home that evening I told the wife that I had made some good sets and there was a possibility that I could have 7 coyotes this morning.Well this morning after the line was run I ended up with 6 my personal best .That was a Kodak Moment for me.The only problem is I didn't have a Camera on the line..

Great job. My best catches usually happen when I have no camera.

They take coyotes this time of year? Had a buddy doing it, but he said it wasn't worth it during the summer months because they hardly pay a quarter of normal price.

Running coyotes in a pen with dogs is a big sport. I don’t know the whole just of it, but I think it’s the actual tracking part, they don’t catch them.

With all the highways and private property in parts of the east, there is a contigent of fox/coyote hunters who run their dogs in pens for the dogs safety. Also in states that have a running season, they can run the dogs in the pen when the season is closed outside. Years ago when I was looking for some July pups I figured out I wanted pups out of dogs that were banned from the pens. Because they ban dogs that are catching and killing coyotes. Those coyotes are expensive and the pen owners don't want them hurt.

Kodak moment UPDATE day 2....I hit the road this morning at 4
am. I had extended my line yesterday to some more property. When the line was complete I ended up with 5 more coyotes. All we're caught in post hole sets. The. Coyotes from both days ranged from young males older males and a couple older females.

How big are these pens?
Slipknot - good job on those coyotes! Are they sold locally or do you travel a ways?

Biggest one in Georgia is about 2000 acres. Most here are 300 to 500 acres.

There were about 30 permitted enclosures here about 10 years ago. I'm not sure how many are still in operation. I haven't sold to a pen in over a decade so not sure what's left in operation.

Also, here in Georgia, if you have a good reputation with the pen owner/operator (and catch good numbers) they will come to you and get them. Otherwise, you'd have transport to them after scheduling a time.

Thanks, SW. Just wondering as there is nothing like that around here.

trapdog1,
These are operated as hound training enclosures. Although competition field trials are held at some of the better pens. Numbers painted on the hounds, judges on foot or horseback looking for hounds that stay on track, don't cut, etc. Some pens even do the old English-style hunts with all on horseback, era-related clothing complete with derby hats and knee-high black boots, whips and cow horn blowing.

No coyote or fox is shot. The pen owners provide feeders, water sources, and escape areas for the coyotes/fox.
