Try to find someone to take you out as a friend rather than on a charter. I'm not sure what the regs are in the Homer area, but at least in some areas in recent years, there have been slot limits and a catch limit of only one halibut a day on charter boats, whereas private boat fishermen are allowed two per day, any size.

Sadly the size of Halibut is nowhere near what it was several years ago. I've heard numerous explanations for this but the days of catching "Barn Doors" is apparently gone. Average size Halibut today out of Homer is pretty tiny. And King's are disappearing. She ain't what she used to be.

We all have to remember, we are talking about how big the fish was, that we caught. Just saying

Average size Halibut today out of Homer is pretty tiny. And King's and Cohos are disappearing. Our King runs are dismal, but our silver runs are pitiful. Both closed again. Fortunately, the tourist won't find the word closed ( there would be a lot of that ) in the Regulation book. They will find out when they get here.

^^^^ This was out in front of Egigik two summers ago. As far as I know there is absobutely zero sport fishing going on in Bristol Bay. There's an opportunity for someone.

Unfortunately, that wasn't on my boat. A friend of mine was crewing on that boat for sockeye. I think they were fishing under a village quota, he may have commercial halibut quota though, I'm not sure which. Regardless, there seems to be a virtually unexploited resource there.
