Walnut hulls will give a good dark color but won't hold. There is no effective mordant for walnut so it will fade and wash out. Can you get sumac berries? Using ferrous sulfate as a mordant for a dye made of sumac berries gives a gray that will hold.

Over the years I have used about everything that's out there but for the last 20 or so years I use "Buckbrush" aka: Sumac berries when I want to dye something like traps, cloth, etc. Plus it has a woods smell to it.

Same here, walnuts or sumac. Both free and common around here.
I wax afterward too. Traps last for decades if you take care of them and don’t let them rust.
Wouldn’t let your hammer rust, should never let a trap rust either.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I bet logwood crystals would create a very dark result.

Tatiana ,that is some beautiful work and colors ! Thank you all for trying to help .I do not have any of the suggestions above here ! Crazy .We do have vine or mountain maple .Should I strip the green bark and boil ? I could just buy the log wood but this type of stuff I am interested in (using available things in nature that are local ). Thanks to all !
