As a testament to the quality of people I believe to be on this forum, I figured Trapperman is the best place on the internet to ask for advice. I’m takin my family on a road trip from Minnesota to Montana in September. Since I don’t have an elk tag I figure the next best thing I can do is take the family to where the elk are! I got 10 days planned for out there. We’re gunna be sleeping in a tent. We love exploring wilderness and avoiding crowds, but realize that’s something a guy deals with in some areas. For sure we’d like to spend at least a morning on horse back… What’re some things you guys recommend to do and see out there?

Elk hunting starts in September in some areas. If you want to see Wildlife Enter Yellowstone through Cook City and exit Gardner.

Yellowstone still has some elk, but not like it was. Another place with good elk numbers that hasn't been infested yet is up in the Charles Russel Reserve. I think it's called the Slippery Ann, there's a viewing area and such. The Breaks are a pretty cool area to see as well as the mountains..

What MTtraps didn't mention is if you make the choice to go to Slippery Ann check the weather if there's a chance of rain I wouldn't get to far from the pavement unless you pack a lot of drinking water and food just in case it's very well named as the gumbo can make things miserable at best if you're not familiar with it ha ha

There can be quite a few people there to view the elk so some good binoculars and a spotting scope and comfortable chairs are a good idea not knowing how many make up you're family I'd put the chairs in the back of a pickup for a better view as the elk wander wherever they want to .

There will be rangers around so don't leave the main road or take a drone to fly out there to get a better view as they don't have much of a sense of humor about things like that .

You're friend along the snare line .
