Ruger made their own SMALL FRAME AR
so the frame size is AR-15 weight and length but they squeezed a 308 in
normally an AR-10 is about an inch inch and a half longer and that adds weight
the SFAR is a small frame AR-10 basically it takes AR-10 mags to fit the 308 ammo but keeps the size and weight of everything else down.
6.8 pound 16 inch and a 7.2 pound 20 inch rifle where a typically AR-10 is more like 9-11 pounds.
My son has one a 20 inch , they are not for everyone , they have 200 round break in period where you need to play with the gas port settings and then you find the ammo that works for you. 7.62x51 and 308win vary so drastically in gas port pressure that you have to have an adjustable gas block.
the factory SFAR gas block has setting 0 for no gas , 1 for suppressed , 2 for broken in and 3 for your first 100-200 rounds or if you might be running a 7.62 load and it won't quite cycle the action on 2 there are a few people playing with them and there is a company making an even more adjustable gas block so for the guys who want to better tune the gun to a particular ammo they can.

I bought the first one I saw, thought it was an incredible idea. The rifle would not function properly, and was in accurate, I did everything the manual said to do with no improvement, called Ruger, got some more suggestions tried them and no improvement. Sent the rifle back to Ruger, they replaced the gas system, recut the chamber, and honed the barrel. Problem solved it shoots much better, is reliable and the ejection issue is solved. I got in a hurry and should have waited until they had the bugs worked out, I am sure the current production ones have all those issues resolved. They are not a match rifle and were never designed to be they fill the role they were designed for very well. I like mine now, at first not so much.
It is AR-15 handy with 308 punch.

Will it shoot both the 7.62 and .308 rounds? yes they re the same case just 7.62x51 nato is low pressure compared to 308 win (the exact opposite of 223 and 5.56 were the 223 is the lower pressure round) you may need to run 7.62x51nato on setting 3 and not 2

Well, I got one. I was wanting a lightweight gun for thermal hunting. I almost went with an SBR and my gun guy talked me into the SFAR. It wasn’t until it was ordered I started really doing reviews and thought I’ve screwed up!! I’ve only shot a magazine through it and went ahead and shot suppressed since that’s what I’d be using it for anyways. It performed flawlessly. I haven’t decided what scope to put on it yet and just shot into a backstop from 50yds. I’d shoot 5 rounds and give it a minute to cool down. Shot another 5 until the mag was empty. No FTE, FTF, and the bolt locked up on empty. I shot all 150gr hunting ammo. Federal, Hornady, etc..just 5 of each. They say it takes 200rds to break it in. There are some real horror stories with this gun and I’m thinking some may be self inflicted. Most I read about were people shooting off brand ammo and having issues. I realize they expect the gun to run anything they find, but to be safe and for my purpose of the gun, I’m not feeding it junk. This is the 16” barrel and I shot it suppressed on setting 1 with the Banish 30. I’ll keep posting once I figure out which scope to top it with and hopefully start killing critters with it.

Imo a large part of most AR problems is people feeding them completely junk and getting mad when they don't work . Like " idk what's the problem I was feeing it a mix of wolf and tula steel cased !" Believe it or not, that’s exactly what a lot of the reviews said, except those brands I’ve heard of, lol. They were naming Brazilian ammo and Serbian ammo they got a “great deal” on, 500rds! Yeah, I realize I’m probably not gonna win any competitions with this rifle, but that’s not what I bought it for. I wanted a lightweight AR that packs a punch that I can carry 400-500yds and still be able to shoot offhand if needed. The trigger is actually fairly nice for an AR too. I’m sure I’ll add or change something here and there, but I like it so far. I’ll find out what it likes after topping it with optics and get a large supply on hand.
