There was a post from our local news station on Facebook about the cicadas, and that they are probably going to be around until at least the end of June.
I simply made a comment on it that I went up to a few trees and shook the living daylights out of it and watched hundreds of the cicadas take flight….
I gave my granddaughter one of those bug zapping tennis rackets to go smack them…
The comments that came out attacking me for it were unbelievable…
Said that it was “ disturbing “ and cruel.
No matter how much I tried,, I couldn’t get through to them that the blasted things aren’t going to be living but just a few more weeks… they make babies and die.
People have a perfect utopia in their minds, they are so freaking separated from reality.

That is why this site is the closest thing to "social media" I have.

My wife and I were discussing one day what could be Gods' reason for creating those cicadas and I said I really didn't know. Then in a couple days we had a big gust of wind and they were hitting the ground by the dozens and our old hens were grabbing them like they were candy. They were swallowing them whole, usually a bug that size they cut them up and eat a little at a time. I looked at my wife and said that was enough reason for me why God made them.

Maybe from the OP experience with the squeamish at heart, maybe we should have fastened the hens up so they didn't sin but we didn't.

Makes as much sense as customers that want packrats trapped and relocated

A friend of mine, who should know better, posted an article on Facebook that said that 17 and 13 year cicadas were totally beneficial for people and plants and shouldn't be harmed. I pointed out that cicadas spend their entire underground life robbing trees of the nutrition the trees need to grow and thrive from their roots. I also pointed out that cicadas cut slices into thinner branches of trees, to lay their eggs in them, typically killing the branch at the point where they cut it. People believe what they read to much, even when it's contrary to what they have seen. They should know better.

The responders attacking you on that page were likely products of the propaganda spewed by our public school system and the mainstream media. And they were likely raised by parented who had been exposed to the same form of brain-washing.

Tree huggers are everywhere, next they will call it cruel to kill mosquitoes.

Why would anyone kill a helpless mosquito ?

Last year or the year before we had a huge hatch each morning we walked around the yard picking them up and normally got tired and stopped at about 2.5 to 3 gallon worth and took them over to the chickens and dumped them on the ground. Reminded me of videos I saw of feeding prana.

People who say it's disturbing and cruel are stupid people who probably don't even know what they are.

What is wrong with that. We hunt hoppers with 22's, it is a good way to teach gun control for new shooters and a LOT of laughs......jk
