I used to do a lot of solo hunts when I live in Alaska. Fly-in, walk-in and boat. I remember coming down off a mountain one evening just at dusk and stumbling on a moose kill a grizzly had claimed. It's the neatest thing if you've never seen it. They'll dig and mound up the dirt surrounding the carcass in some instinctive effort to hide their prize from other carnivores. It doesn't seem to work but they try.

Anyway, I was carrying a .300 Win Mag at the time and I felt completely undergunned. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end as I backed out of there. I've seen grizzly bears take an awful lot of punishment before the life went out of them. I wouldn't want to depend on a handgun to do it. Better than nothing but you better have your wits about you.

Awesome stuff! Unfortunately mines a paper weight locked in the safe thanks to our gun laws....If I had a treaty card I could use it though.

I have seen some well shot bears do some crazy stuff before dying.
A hand gun is better than nothing. There was an attack in Hoonah about 30 years ago. Kid walking home, bear jumped him, kid pulled out his folding pocket knife and stabbed that bear to death.
That was a brown bear.

Yep. The first round just seems to amp them up.

I've seen .45 auto hardball not penetrate an oak tree and come right back at the shooter.
I thought at the time that wouldn't make kind of defense round for dangerous game.
For soft meat only.

I popped a black bear in "must do" situation with a .22 LR. DRT one shot. I don't recommend it... but luck was on my side that day.

That’s just a crying shame. Everyone should be able to choose the type of bear spray dispenser that they wish…..

Somewhere floating around the internet is a story of a Canadian Indian woman who was out berry picking and all she had with her was her was her single shot .22 and a broken box of .22 longs. This was back in the 40s or 50s maybe. A big brown bear came by and took interest in her. She shot the bear somewhere around the ear hole and the bear dropped like it was poleaxed. She was worried she had just stunned it so she shot up the rest of the box of her .22 long cartridges into the same place around the ear hole. Indian woman, use to skinning out game, she knew just where to shoot the bear to kill it. Bear ended up being some kind of a record for size.

If I remember correctly it was Simon Paneak up in Anatuvik that killed a charging grizz with a 22 hornet. The problem with shotguns and rifles is that you tend to put them down but with a pistol it's always with you. A friend of mine uses a suppressed 300 blackout for both blacks and grizz and he's taken a lot of bears with it. YouTube has a lot of penetration tests and the results can be quite surprising!

In the mid '80s probably I was with a group of guys in Chibougamau Quebec Canada and got done with breakfast first. Walked out and talked to a guy about trapping, he trapped bear and used a 22 for dispatch. I could have bought one of his traps for $60 but did not???? They were double longs and I THINK(?) very old, at least looking. Never did see the gun.....jk

Well, I think the logic of filing down or removing the front sight is that; when the bear takes the gun from you and rams it up your anal orifice that it won't hurt near as much.

I always said that I am too rotten for a bear to want to chew on me. So far, can’t dispute that…
