Looking at a Remington sportsman 48 it has a poly choke this would strictly be used for pigs with #1 buckshot . Does anyone have any input on buckshot with poly chokes? And before you say buckshot shouldn't be used for pigs I will say that for the type of hunting we do it can I have had great success and a rifle is not an option.mostly looking to see if I can run full choke.

#1 Buck so we are talking a 16 gauge? I don't see why you couldn't use it. It is a good idea to thread the "Dial a Duck/deer" all the way off and clean the threads and "ptelas" on the ckoke. If you don't, they tend to freeze up or get stuck. I would make sure the choke turns before buying it.

I have nothing clever to put here.

It's a 12 gauge. Also I'm a machinist so I was wondering about converting to a threaded choke

if you put #1 buck in a wad it works perfect in a 12ga
get decent patterns also

Midway was selling it at a very reasonable price a few months back I posted about it as a buckshot deal.

I have a poly choke and a Clect choke , I don't think I have ever run buck through either with them choked down

I would start with it on improved cylinder and go one setting at a time patterning

the issue with slugs and some buck or larger steel shot and such is that the velocity is too high and the ability to compress isn't there.

look at standard chokes they typically say nothing larger than BB or faster than 1500fps beyond a certain choke constriction
the issue is the shots ability to compress , at high speed and larger size shot it doesn't have time

now if you are running that Fiocchi #1 buck it was a slower load of reduced recoil or at least the case I got is.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I'd take it apart, clean it up and crank it all the way down and shoot paper with it first. They work pretty good chalked all the way down. The issue that I have had with them is not being sure exactly what my pattern was after turning the knob to anywhere but full choke mode.

I've shot the same model in full choke and it eats buckshot that's why I'm thinking about this one

I shot all types of buckshot through your exact gun with a polychoke. Later, I had a Cutts Comp installed and used a super full tube with buckshot.

Only Polychoke problem I ever heard about was one that flew off a 20 gauge during a quail hunt. The shot size was #8 and the choke setting was Imp Cyl.

If it’s the old sportsman walk away they are junk a couple buddies bought them they fell apart I would not shoot low brass 9s of one of those guns.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

The old Remington barrels are thinner wall material than the new choke tube barrels. Can be modified by some company like Briley if you insist. Machining needs to be dead center, not off by a few thousandths.
Plus, it will be hard to find parts for it if mechanically if something goes wrong. They have been out of production for decades.

Shot/killed my first deer with a slug out of poly choked shotgun...not any issues. AND shot literally thousand of shot shells of all types out a Rem, Sportsman 48....besides some cold weather complications with the gun's action....never had problems. Weird how some work and others don't....

My father had a JC Higgins with a poly choke. Patterned the best with 9 pellet 2 3/4 inch 00 buck. Poly chokes, like any shotgun, need to be patterned with multiple loads to find what shoots best. Don't just lock in on using #1 buck.
