What's eveyone prefer in their house ? Was just having the chat with the guys in the boat
Me personally I prefer window units over central. Just cheaper and more efficient for my place. Only turn them on in the rooms I'll be in that day. So one in my room ,one in the master bedroom , one in the gun room ,on in the den and gotta put one in the guest room. But yeah just flick it on when I'm in there keep it off when I'm not. Hurricane comes though , I don't have to have anything super big or crazy to run just one ( usually just open the window ).
Also I get like 3-5 years out of one and its less then $150 to replace tone of it goes out , vs the $20k-50k I've seen friends and family have to spend on central replacements/ repairs.
Also nice being the lady is in the anemic side and she like the room hot I like it could so I can just have my lil some soft the house frozen while shes got the gates of (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) a burning in her part of the house laugh
Anyhow what about yall

I guess it all depends on the type of heating you have. If forced air, then central for sure and no where near 20k - more like 3k

Heck, you can get a mini split that will heat and cool for 3k

the one you didn't mention

mini split

outdoor unit like central , with indoor in room air handlers

none of the weaknesses and losses of window units and you can control room by room

better efficiency

better drainage

no window leaking around the unit

Central air for sure. Lived most of my life with first no ac, then window units, and now in MS central air and I'd never go back.

Central air if you have existing duct work. Mini-splits if you don't. Mini-splits are pretty nice.

Eh...wot?

Used window units for years, I had 3 running almost full time and that aint cheap. Have central now, it's really nice and nowhere near 20,000,
My wife has MS, so the heat and humidity really bother her, I can handle more heat but the lack of humidity in the house is nice. The new mini splits seem like a good compromise, especially if you don't have room in your attic for the blower and ducts.

we have a very old central air

we will be getting mini splits to replace it

I was at a place last weekend with mini splits
almost no noise in the room and set the temp exactly where you want it and it will keep it there

It might be the best thing since the car having dual adjustments one for driver the other for passenger

that way you can keep the air on and she can keep the heat on and it is marital bliss

it is really the only feature beyond power steering an brakes any car needs

I grew up with it for the most part and honestly don't like it as much.

Your house must look pretty ghetto with all those units hanging out of it.

I don't need AC except for about 5 days out of the year, but from what I've heard lately are mini-splits for both heating and AC.
FWIW, on hot days (mid 80s-mid 90's) I just open all the windows and doors at about 11PM, it cools down into the 50s-60s, then close everything up about 7AM, and keep the window blinds closed and the house stays comfortable until about 4PM.

You can always tell which way the OP leans when they quote outrageous costs, lol. Never heard of a central heat and air unit costing $20-50K, lol.
My unit is 31 years old and I’m replacing it next week for $4200. We’ve definitely got our monies worth out of it and it’s still running, but we have to add Freon every 4-6months and know it’s just a matter of time before it quits.
Down South central heat and air is the only way to go. I don’t know of anyone without it. I just can’t see 5-6 window units to try and cool a house. There’s no way that’s cost effective in our heat.

But down here where he is in summer there are plenty of nights that it never gets below 75 and the humidity stays through the roof.

This time of year, when it gets down into the 60s at night we too open the doors overnight, draw the drapes in the morning, and can usually make it until 11am at least before turning on the air, lol.

I use a 5,000 but in my bedroom window. Only use it at night. I can't imagine running a central air unit all day like a lot of people do, the electric bills must be insane.

the mini splits can do heat and cool

I have seen from a small one room type to having them so large 5 do the entire church

great answer for big old buildings like a brick church with high ceilings and no place to run ducts

also great for a small hole through the wall and run an air handler in a fairly central location in the house.
