A good eye appeal bait with a good paste bait/trailing scent and a touch of ghog gland will catch any ghog that is close to the trap set up area. You need to be within their foraging range or near the active den site.

Cantaloupe is a wonderful bait, but now that you’re thinking about things that will get their attention and why, you’ll be able to find something that’ll get their attention when the store doesn’t have cantaloupe.

I’ve never tried carrots or oranges, but if you present them right they should work. You will find some baits are eaten, some are left untouched in the trap with them in there with it. Visual appeal brought them in, but something else is lacking once they got close.

It certainly seems to.

Check out Jim Comstock’s videos on trapping woodchucks.

That video was very helpful thanks! The problem is, his cage traps are out of my budget for now. I want to get some since they are quality.

For groundhogs you don’t need the quality that Jim’s traps offer. They aren’t particularly destructive against traps.

His swing panels aren’t too expensive and will work well for them. They can be harder to set due to their length though.

Any double door will work in that situation though. You may need to tune it as the fit and finish of some traps just aren’t ready to go from the box.

This will work for woodchucks, skunks and opossums. I would not use this for raccoons.

Stay away from raccoon jobs right now. The 3 Rs (raccoons, red squirrels, and rats) will make you look stupid if your sets aren’t perfect. Get better making sets for the easier animals.
