No hot water. I can go down and re start It and In 1/2 hour I have hot water for a shower. But when I run out of hot water the burner won't come back on. The trouble shooting guide on the tank tells me If the green light flashes 5 times In 3 seconds I have a thermostat failure,
So should I just try and figure out the thermostat issue or have a plumber come In and replace the whole control system. Or would I be better off just replacing the whole heater.

How old is the water heater is the first question.if it's old your probably better off to replace it then put new parts on it.

I would think a beaver trapper would be used to bathing in cold water! grin

If it's got lights flashing codes, it's computer controlled. Even if you could replace the part, you may need a tech to come and clear whatever code it has. I'd just pay some one to fix it.

I do most of my own plumbing. I learned a long time ago just replace the whole unit--mostly because our hard water is so rough on them. Installing them is not too bad.

It's the wife that has problems with cold showers.

I talked to a expert. To get It up and running the gas control system needs replacing. The cost installed Is $500.00 A new water heater installed runs about 1,100.00.
The water heater Is 12 years old I think It's time to replace It.

I highly recommend one of these. Mine was installed in 2013 and it has been flawless.

I agree with the tankless route....never go back to a hot water tank.

if it is 12 years old with bad electronics , I would agree time to replace

it is a real shame we can't make water heaters that can be rebuilt and are easy to service there really isn't a reason they couldn't be
