This morning I was out doctoring yearlings and after roping and laying down the second of the day I look up and about 400 yds away is a coyote setting at the top of a cut watching me. Didn't think much about it as I usually see coyotes when I get up in this country. Anyways after treating the calf and turning it lose I'm coiling up my ropes when I glance up to see if the coyote is still watching. Sure enough it had moved about 20 yds but it was still up there watching. But as I'm watching it and packing up my gear a pait of coyotes come out of a draw about 250 yds between me and the coyote at the top of the hill. Now these two are headed towards me and it didn't take me long to figure out they where headed right for me. Now this is open prairie with no trees within a mile just grass about boot top tall to Savell so basically me and the horse are just standing out in the open. Now these coyotes are looking right at us but I'm standing on the off side of the horse so they can't really see me and pretty much think my horse is a cow. My first thought was to quickly build a loop and try to rope one but decided I was on the wrong mount for that task. Decided just to stay put and see what unfolded. I checked the wind with a little grass and decided they'd smell me at about a hundred yards if they held coarse. One started thinking something was wrong and started checking up at about a hundred and fifty yds but the other kept coming until it winded me and then left.

Only thing I can figure is when I roped that calf it started bawling in distress and those coyotes heard that and were coming for the free meal. Generally coyotes don't get to killing baby calves around here but it does happen once in awhile. Way those coyotes were coming in I'm guessing they might have had some involvement in nabbing a baby calf or two before. They saw my horse and was coming right to us until the first one winded me.

Yeah lucky for the coyotes I'm not Boone or he'd be sneaking back in there before sunrise tomorrow morning to earn his pay.
We don't calve up in that country so I didn't feel it was my direct responsibility to turn bounty hunter on them. Nor did I have a long gun with me to go hunting them.

Things could have gotten a bit more exciting had they not winded you when they did!

Coyotes usually put it in high gear if I pull in the yard or crack open the door. Last fall I was mowing the back pasture and one came out of the woods and sat down about 100 yds and watched. My lab was running along and pouncing on mice and voles. Pass after pass the coyote sat til I was 20 yds. then it got up and trotted off. Strange. First time in 40 yrs. I've been on the place.

I was out running my husky along a county road when a female coyote came up running parallel along the fence line
Dang dog ran off over the hill with her. I drove thru a pasture and got him back when he was done with business

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Seth, you ever rope a coyote? I was trapping a ranch in the sand hills few years back and one of the cowboys, young guy, roped two of them on different days. Impressed me anyways.

Grandson has tried a couple times but I dont think he has succeeded

… that was Seth more than likely…. He’s the inspiration for most of Chris Ledoux’s and Taylor swifts’ songs

Lol
Danny I've tried. Speed wise I can catch up to them pretty easy. Some run straight and some duck and dive like a fox when coyotes are after them. The ones that duck and dive my horse just can't react fast enough. I jumped one one time that ran straight and I was close enough for a got shot for over a quarter mile but didn't have a rope. I'll get the right one one of these times. I know a couple guys who have roped them. Knew a feller who roped an antelope once. They had to run it in relays to get it done and still about ruined their horses

Savell your jealousy is getting almost shameful
