Honestly for best work I would bump up to a .22 but .177 is still viable, just need a bit more precise (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) placement.
So I will saybi wouldn't go super crazy as far as speed as this lil pellets tend to over stabilize and go crazy over 900-1000 fps.

No if you have an open budget, I'd go with a PCP for $500 you can get a good one from about any one. Now days ( honestly don't see any point in spending more then $700 now days unless you just really like airguns, the cost to entry for good stuff for the average guy has dropped sooooo low in the last few years).

Benjamin discovery, Maximus or marauder are some good starters. I know airport trapper has a avenger that he loves . But like I said man everyone has a decent one now for not a lot of cash. And if you like exercise you can get one of the hand pumps to fill it and it's like 30shot per fill.... probably more with a .177.

Id stay away from lower price spingers like gamos. Recoil breaks non air gun rated scopes and if you used to shooting regular rifles non free recoil they are a pain ... Now the nice ones that different

Couple of good multiple pumps out now too. Think the Seneca dragonfly is leading the pack.

Right now I'm running a gamo urban PCP and I love it think I have less then $400 in mine with the pump . It's in .22 but no doubt it would be just as good in .177

Actually a cut a past from the last post I made in my urban

So I actually got this two months ago and haven't said much about it. Needed a new one for stuff around the farm and some houses in town. Air rifle aren't considered firearms so you can use them in a lot of places in place of a .22lr. also it's dead quiet. Like stupid quiet. But I've been messing with it on and off. Regular $300 got it on sale at prymid air for $270 and had to drop another $125 on a new stirrup pump because my old one needs a reseal. Anyhow so far not super hard to fill from 1000psi to 3000psi. Handles pretty well. The magazine makes live nice and is pretty accurate, though I haven't been able to do any detailed pellets testing. Anyhow if you wanted to get into a modern PCP this is a nice little option for the price cool

O and also when you say best and varmit, what size we taking ? Rarts to rabbits or like coon or possum sized critters ?

Use mine for pigeons out to 70yd but I'd have to keep it within 25yd for anything bigger then a rabbit to feel comfortable

This one looks interesting if you want to avoid the whole pump/compressor issue that comes with PCP.

My beater crosman 2100 classic is about beat to death and I've compared specs. That dragonfly is a step up in velocity. It also comes in 22.

The big tanked pcp can get crazy amount of shots per fill in .177 I read some were close to 500. each cal diameter increase greatly decrease shot count per fill. Then you need to decide if you want one that's regulated. That keeps shots more consistent fps from shot to shot.

Midway USA has the Benjamin Gunnar PCP rifle on sale this month for around 550 bucks it retails for 1000 bucks. It comes with a nice hard case and a free-hand pump. I bought one and I'm very happy with my purchase. It is the most accurate air rifle I have shot and I have a bunch of pellet guns in my collection. You can get 70 shots with the regulator set at the factory setting. It is a very well-built gun with a 5-year warranty. It is very quiet. I bought the 22-caliber model. You can get it in 22, 25 or 45 caliber. Hand pumping it up to 3000 psi is some of a chore, but if you don't let the psi drop below 1000 psi it is not bad. I think I will buy a scuba tank to refill it in the future. Off the bench mine will shoot dime-size groups at 50 yards and 2-inch groups at 100 yards. I highly recommend it. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1023242049

It is the same stock used on AR 15 rifles. It doesn't fold up but does collapse down to make it shorter. I don't think you would get this gun to fit in a backpack. With the stock collapsed all the way down the gun is still 40" long
