I cringe when I see people shooting flint locks with no eye protection. And yeah, beating on the muzzle of an expensive gun with the back of a tomahawk - no thanks!

The looks like an absolute blast of a good time. Great to see people combining all those old skills, instead of just shooting or throwing hawks. I know plenty of skinners that can't light a fire or set a trap. Good to see them using the old style jaw post trap, those are much harder to set, can't break the springs down and hold them with your legs.
That woman is marryin' material for sure.
I'll second coonlove on both points. I have enough powder specks in my glasses to show why I wear them every time I shoot flinters. Including hunting.
And hammering on a muzzle is not something I will do either.
Other than those little nitpicks, great video.

that does look fun

I see 3 thing that make me cringe

charging the pan from the main horn

lack of follow through on the shot and loading shoving hand over the end of the rod

some one is asking for a stigmata

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I prime from my main horn all the time. For some reason, there are no rules about that, but plenty of rules about loading the barrel from the main horn. I figure if the charge hasn't gone off by the time I prime, I'm good. In the old days, the military used to prime first, before loading the barrel. No way would I ever do that.

Agree, very, very little follow through on many of the shooters.

And hands on the ramrod, that's asking for a hole in the hand, or a broken rod.

All of these things are very common practices in many groups though.

I teach kids so all those things are off limits
everything we do has an extra 50% safety margin built in so they have to be doing it twice wrong to get hurt

we run zero wooden rods
we wipe between every shot
we use short strokes holding the rod around and not over the end
we charge the pan from a measure or plunger type pan charger.

we also only let kids use a max charge of 60gr , enough to hit any target to 100 yards in a 45 or 50
but 1/2 of the max charge for most guns

I will say I see a lot more no charge and never had them double charge that I am aware of
most of the time they are shooting 30gr at paper it makes our powder last longer and them a lot less likely to develop a flinch.

I always charge from the main horn and only use a wood rod. Have for 20+ years, but I'm not a kid. Not a bad idea to teach kids how to do it right with no chance of getting hurt even if they do it wrong. Multiple short strokes with the rod is the way to keep from breaking the rod and getting hurt. It needs to be ingrained habit.

I used to compete in something called a "Seneca Run" over here. It was a timed/scored match that included shooting, reloading, and hawk and knife throwing. I did pretty well as I trained to load and shoot on the run. I also practiced hawk and knife throwing on the run. I think I still have my "Mountain Man of the Year" trophy.

It was really fun and certainly a spectacle for the onlookers.
