My grandfather served in the US army in Europe during WW1. Quartermaster core perhaps. He passed away long ago but among his possessions passed down is the item shown in the photos. I have read that all of the US expeditionary force personnel received a service medal from the US gov't, but this is obviously not that. It appears to be a French 2 franc piece with holes drilled for the chain and the back smoothed and engraved. I don't know what the numbers mean or the origin of the item. I have seen 2 franc coins for sale on ebay with similar holes showing the front of the coin only.

I cannot find any info on the web regarding what this item may be. Does anyone have any knowledge of what this is or what the numbers mean?

Just a stab. A.E.F. is allied expeditionary force. I'm guessing the number is his serial number. Interesting that it says France and USA. I'm thinking a souvenir similar to a dog tag. Definitely a silver French coin.

I knew what AEF meant but forgot to say so. The number being his service number never occurred to me. That seems likely. Service numbers were started in 1918 and ended with 5,999,999 when SS numbers began being used. The number on the coin fits the pattern in place at the time. Thanks.

American Expeditionary Force, Numbers may be his unit designation.
