Over half of the black slaves in Texas had black owners. That's a little known fact that is being edited out of history.

Blacks owned lesser numbers of blacks in other states, but not insubstantial numbers. "African-American history and culture scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote:

... the percentage of free black slave owners as the total number of free black heads of families was quite high in several states, namely 43 percent in South Carolina, 40 percent in Louisiana, 26 percent in Mississippi, 25 percent in Alabama and 20 percent in Georgia."

"Free black slaveholders in New Orleans offered to fight for Confederate Louisiana in the Civil War. Over 1,000 free black people volunteered and formed the 1st Louisiana Native Guard."

Percentage wise, blacks were more likely to own other blacks than whites were.

Juneteenth, (19 Jun), marks the day that somebody finally told the slaves in Texas that the civil war was over, the north had won, and all the slaves were freed. 2 years after the fact!

Nope. Though payroll apparently was delayed today for my main job. Bank was open though so I could cash checks from my side jobs

I'm Norwegian and it would (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) me off if there was a national holiday where banks,post offices,ect shut down to honor us.

It was known as Emancipation Day for a long time...I still refer to it as that.

It seems like Juneteenth was promoted to bring up an unpleasant part of US history, that we have happily moved past, to divide people, who for the most part seem to get along very well now. I think it's best to let wounds heal over, while at the same time never letting the same mistakes be made again.

I don't see any good coming from making Juneteenth a national holiday. I think it will just cause hatred between people, none of whom took part in American slavery. It's best just to judge people on their own merits.
