Two types of mange are out there; demodectic and sarcoptic. Sarcoptic mange (scabies) is the one we usually see, and is caused by mites burrowing underneath the skin, and the buildup of mite feces in the skin, which causes severe, desperate scratching. It is contagious. It is usually seen on the ears, elbows, and abdomen first. It usually ruins the pelt. Trappers often call any skin condition with hair loss, mange. This is an error.

Here is a coyote with advanced sarcoptic mange.

This red fox doesn't have mange, just shedding fur in summertime (August). No yellow, crusty, lesions, just a worthless pelt.

Happy solstice!

I see quite a bit of that in my area
I caught a late season coyote and I thought it was mange
[Linked Image]
There was snow on the ground and I was in a bit of a hurry so I didn't look around much
I went back by there a week or so later and the edge of the catch circle was filled with hair
Apparently she did this to herself overnight. I've never seen this behavior before
She did have an old injury that was still healing.
Have you ever seen them do things like this?

Caught tons of reds with mange, even ran one down on foot and killed it with a trapping trowel, because it was so crippled up by mange

I grew up on a farm I spent time forking manure removing dead chickens that the heat had already started them to rot I was also involved with butchering live stock for food I was accustom to dealing with some unpleasant aspects of dealing with dead animals But dealing with a dead animal that had a serious case of mange was the most disgusting thing I can think of It turns my stomach And for the animal rights people it is an example of how nature deals with population control in the real world

Are humans susceptible to anything when dealing with an animal who has mange?

I believe it's called scabies in humans.

YES! Scabies (Sarcoptic Mange) can be transmitted to humans. Mine started out as an insane itching on my fingers.

I get one or two coyotes a year most seasons that is about the normal level I see. Some years more, some years less. I can only recall a couple season with no mange cases in my catches.
It’s always such a let down when I see a coyote bouncing around and then as I get closer to the set realizing it has mange. Sometimes I get a scruffy looking coon too. Fuzzy butts and bald patches.
Ugh.

Probably the worst one I seen in the delta so far but there’s been a few others.

Should let some ARs see those photos. If they think their strategy of "let nature takes it's course" is humane, they are some sick human beings. Good conservation by reducing their numbers is the most humane option.

I once combined lines with a guy who harvested the claws and skulls for the craft trade- even if the critters had mange. He would get it a couple or 3 times a year and would just shrug his shoulders and rub some motor oil on his hand like it was nothing.

Them "Good Ol' Country boy's" would do that to their hounds, and it works.
