Snare wire #9 and #11 is oily when you buy it how do you remove oil ? Soap and water /car wash like a new traps?

Snare support wire?? Put it in a fire and let cool slow. Will be oil free and anealed.

Car wash, degreaser and hot water. Dish washer works great just make sure to get it out immediately or it’ll rust your rack.

Or just leave it outside for a while.

This works great if you have the harder, stiffer wire. I got a whole bunch of 9 wire at an estate auction years ago, but it was the stiffer stuff. I threw it in a fire and it annealed it so it was softer and easier to work with. Still have probably have a few hundred feet of it left fifteen years later.

If it is already soft, Boones method works fine. I've done the same with hard 11 wire, I've got enough 11 wire to last me a lifetime from estate auctions. And no longer can tell what was soft wire when I got it and what was hard and annealed by me in a fire.

I have bought 11 wire years back though that was not oiled, and did not rust easily.

I like my support wire STIFF.
I get my wire from the local farm store and It's stiff and has no oil on It.

Betwixt and between on which is worse, greasy wire or rust stains on my hands, lol.

I precut the #9 support wires to 18" to 24" lengths and dip them in same dip with the snares.

Only use snares for beaver here and most supports are nailed with fence staples onto side of tree out in water.

Also have some attached to wooden stakes...those are dipped too.

I've given serious thought on dipping mine as well.

I asked an old timer that I had a lot of admiration for this same question. He said he uses as is. No treatment at all. I figured if that's good for him that's good for me.

I guess I worded my question wrong . I thought scent of oil on wire would be an issue for wolf and coyote snares and was wondering how to treat for that

Don't know on that since we are a beaver only state for snaring.

But I've caught city coyotes and fox in brand new untreated footholds. But it's not something I recommend. More of an ox in the ditch need traps in the ground now thing and city coyotes smell grease, oil and gas daily and you can get away with stuff that would freak out a country coyote.

Strangely enough, I won't set an untreated trap or fresh snare/wire for beaver as I do believe they pick up on it and shy away more than a coyote will. I chalk it up to the areas they inhabit. Even in the city folks don't play in beaver swamps while coyotes regularly run where folks hang out.

Treating equipment is more about protecting your equipment than anything else.

Depends on the wolf. They are more dominant and aggressive than a coyote and if they have never been messed with can be pretty dumb and caught in about anything. But I believe they learn even faster than a coyote and they are a pack animal and are taught by the older members of the pack. I believe knowledge of what to avoid can be passed down multiple generations in the pack. I've trapped a couple of packs here that wouldn't come near ANY commercial lure. Blind sets and pee posts/wolf or dog scat were about the only way to catch them.

A dyed and waxed snare will take any smart wolf.
Must be set blind in a natural location(existing wolf trail) for educated wolves.No bait lure scat/urine etc.

I prefer footholds over snares, but do like to have them available in my bag of tricks to use in the right situation. Blind sets, with well treated, odorless equipment are the way to go on any smart canine. My personal favorite set is a blind foothold at a natural pee post, nothing added. I caught one winter before last in the exact set you described though, with somebody else's snare already around his neck. That particular pack has been messed with by several guys and is very educated. They also mark less often than any large pack I have ever seen. Natural pee posts that they return to are almost nonexistent, at least on the portion of their territory that I have access to.

When i was trapping In Canada we came across a empty bottle of Molson standing up right In the road. We were on some backwoods two track. There must have been at least 3 different wolves that had peed on that bottle. I tracked them down to where they left the road and hung a few snares In the trail. They nerve came back.

You should have replaced the empty with a full bottle-they would have come back.
Seriously,you need to find the trails that they use on a regular basis,not one where they walked once.
