A hunter misidentified a young grizzly while hunting over bait near me and shot it. This is a shoutout to our Fish and Game. The hunter had filmed the bear twice and sent the film into Fish and Game asking if it was a grizzly and they said no. They didn't ticket the hunter as they had also misidentified the bear. I hear so many horror stories about C.O.s that I wanted to say I believe here in Idaho we have some great ones.

He's not out of the woods yet if the feds can find a way they'll try to jack him up. We had a mountain lion shot here back 08. No state charges as there was no closed season or laws against it. Initially thought to be an escaped captive but DNA showed it to be Florida one that had wandered north. The feds got the guy. https://www.jacksonville.com/story/...-two-years-probation-banned/15891929007/There is no OPEN season in Georgia for cougars...therefore the season is always closed....which means it is illegal to kill a cougar/mountain lion/Florida panther in Georgia.

My understanding is that at the time there wasn't, hence no state charges. I may be mistaken in that but if so why no state charges then? The DNR initial public statements were suspected captive escapee which would've been legal(?).

The closed season has been in place for many decades. It was in place when that big cat was shot. I can't remember the details, but state officers can turn federal violations over to USFWS.
The article you posted states that there is no open season, also.

That is not the case in every State. That's how it is in Alaska, but in Washington, if it's not classified as a fur bearer or game animal, and if it isn't specifically a protected species, it is then an unclassified species and may be killed at will; eg. opposums, hogs, fallow deer, etc..

Hard to imagine how many wolves have died in Minnesota in the last few years.

I know this makes to much sense to be considered reasonable thinking, but if the hunter had pictures of it and the State Game Dept said not a Griz the blame for misidentifying falls on the state not the hunter. If hunter gets fed ticket pass it to the state

Killing a Griz without a warranted circumstantial reason or legal authorization is a Fed Crime.
Easy to say when you are not the one dealing with them on the left coast. I can’t imagine the number that have had to be SSS over the past several decades due to the unwillingness of our bureaucracies to deal with issues that they themselves have. If you make your living and feed your family trying to raise livestock, or are an outfitter, in the areas that these griz and wolves have been left unmolested for decades you would have a different view I’d be willing to bet. Regardless of what the alphabet agencies think….

In Georgia, the cougar is listed as a game animal...with no open season. So, the season is always closed.
The guy that shot the young grizzly, after checking with Idaho G&F, should be left alone by state and federal LE.

The DNR lies! They do it thoughtout the country. After many photos submitted to local news stations, the DNR in MN has finally admitted there are occasionally cougars that wander into MN.
Immigrants who bypassed legal process in migrating to the US demand legal process before being kicked out.
