It is almost embarrassing to rely on others when it comes to something in nature... that at one time I knew. But here I am... Brain dead.

In my yard I have a small area that every spring I gather up trash plants and limbs etc. and burn them. After burning I keep the area mowed, and clean. During this time the grass starts growing into the vacant area, no weeds have a chance to grow. About 6 or 7 years ago a large weed started to grow at the time just before the burn, so it got incinerated too. Well, this year I am dragging my feet and this same type of weed has made its appearance again, but on the opposite side of the burn pile. Now at its almost maturity I want to see what it is and the closet thing I can come up with is burdock... but it doesn't have the stocks and stems like I am used to with burdock.

The plant is at this time a little over 5 feet tall, and about 5 feet wide. The leaves at the base are 21 to 23 inches long, not including the stem. The individual branches appear to be woody, with a slight sticky feel and underside of leaves tend to be velvety white in appearance. I looked inside the undeveloped bud and could see no color from a flower.

Below are 2 photos: One of the entire plant and the second of the branches and buds, yet to open.

Thanks for any help you guys and gals can come up with to appease this wore out brain of mine.

Burdock, past eating time

Burdock has been here for a couple hundred years. Past being invasive imo.

It is definitely burdock. The burdock on my farm is nearly at the same stage of development. I need to cut it all down soon to keep.the burrs off of the dogs and us.

Looks kinda like lambsquarter, understanding that it's burdock, are they in the same family?

Lambsquarter is in the Amaranth family, with a lot of other common edible weeds. Burdock is in Asteraceae.

Lambsquarter is my favorite edible weed. I prefer it over spinach. I've never tried burdock, but should.

Okay... I guess I was right on to start with... I will take care, cut it now and it to the burn side of the pile.

You guys hardly ever fail and I appreciate the help.

Burdock is a biennial. Since it was blooming, you can tell it's a two year old plant, on its way out. There might still be enough stored energy In the roots for it to to put out a second, weaker bloom, so you should check it in a couple of weeks.

Cocklebur is the pointy, porcupine like burr in Ohio. Burdock has lots of soft pieces that come apart in clothing and fur, making it hard to get out.
