Don’t use a Coni for woodchucks. The risk of catching a non target is too great. Ask Trapper E what can happen.
Footholds aren’t the best either. They’ll work on a farm, but I wouldn’t use them around other people. Catch circles don’t look good to anti trappers that might peer over a fence and have a camera in their pocket. Once you catch something in a foothold, what are you going to do? Dispatch in the yard? Yank it across the yard in a catch pole? Transfer to a cage and risk the customer seeing you make a mistake and watch the woodchuck run across the yard?
I encourage you two to learn ADC work, but do it responsibly. You will find there are a lot of people who don’t like the idea that you’re trapping animals. Some are very vocal about it and can cause you, and us as we are in the industry too, a lot of grief. Go about your jobs quickly, competently, and quietly. Always make your sets with the thought of how do I make this look good in the eyes of the public, who thinks all meat comes from the grocery store. ADC work is a whole different beast than fur trapping.
And make it easy on yourself. Handle the animals as little as possible so there’s less of a chance of looking incompetent. Catch them in a cage, remove them in that cage.
