I got my July/August Trapper’s World today. I was reading the article Something Smells Familiar and couldn’t help but laugh a little. The article is about lures and it talks about how a New York trapper set a bounty record on fox. It claims Lewis Eckhart would setup some sort of smoker up to 20 miles down wind of his trapping area to lure fox. Now I’ve never met Eckhart nor trapped anywhere near him. He probably was a good trapper. But I question what might have been in that smoker if he thought (or wanted anyone else to think) that it drew animals for over 20 miles!! That likely was some might powerful stuff…maybe even sold by the baggie and smoked in a pipe!!

I’m always up for a little story telling but that’s just a bit too much! Even if it was true, I’d be afraid to use something so potent…how many other trappers are operating in that 20 mile scent tunnel?? Now c’mon folks!! Really??

Lew started out 20 miles and move the burner closer each week to his home trapping area.
