Correct Danny the youngsters don know how it was back then. Some things not so good, but lots of things way better. Like I said everything started going downhill after the hippies showed up. Thats what I seen anyway.

Back in the day if you worked at a place and you were lackadaisical you got fired. There were expectations of excellence that were enforced no matter how menial the work. later on you would see lots of useless lazy lumps collecting a paycheque in service work.(and other jobs) That is the main reason those jobs have gone the way of the dodo bird.
Yeah and pretty sure the customers weren't the WONDERFUL paragons of humanity we have now days ( and yes I mean that with complete and total sarcasm). Not to mention back in the day the $5 a hour you made could actually do something for you. O and the whole deal of getting promoted for hard work was actually a thing. Now it's just common knowledge that if your a hard worker that doesn't complain 9/10 times most places will just use you till your spent. Was raised to have a good work ethic but majority of place now days just see that as a free and easy ride. Working like a mule and getting treated like a dog changes people I'm guessing you're talking about Lowe's, and if you are, I couldn't disagree more. I started with Lowe's about 5 years ago, starting pay $14 something. After a year, my position was eliminated and I was thereby demoted in rank but NOT in pay. When I quit a year and a half later, I was making $15-something. I went back 2 and a half years ago, starting pay $14-something. 9 months later I was promoted to team lead, and got a $2 raise. A year later, we were given a cost of living raise of $2. I'm now making close to $19/hr. Mind you, this is for a entry-level style job that requires no special skills or knowledge. Anyone could do it. And don't forget the quarterly bonuses ranging from $300-650. But on top of that, Lowe's is also paying entirely for me to complete my Bachelor's degree. That amounts to $6226 (after grants and scholarships), which equals an additional $3 per hour. Not sure what else you'd want from a big box retail store.

Like I said everything started going downhill after the hippies showed up. Sure ruined Colorado. Late 60's there was a comet you could see and a bunch of hippies went up west of Boulder to wait for the end of the world. Me my dad and grandpa jumped in grandpas pickup and drove over to see them. Filthy bunch of rascals had teepees made of blankets, sleeping in cars etc. When the world didn't end they just stayed. Sheriff went up and rescued them when winter showed up. They just kept coming.

Yote ever considered your store or management might just be better then others ? Sorry I worked hard , went above and beyond took alot of extra responsibilities and just got the run around when I asked about higher pay and. The like, same goes for most of the people I worked with A poor store manager can certainly sour things, but that's just one person and can't be blamed on the corporation as a whole. Maybe your management team sucked, but that doesn't equate to Lowe's as a corporation sucking. In the 5+ years I've been there on and off, we've been through 4 store managers and have currently been without a store manager at all for the past 5 months. When I quit Lowes' in the middle of my stint it was due to a poor store manager, actually. But I blamed it on that manager, not on the company. I've been trying to remember if I've ever asked for a raise in my life. I don't believe I ever have. Generally speaking, if you have to ask for a raise you either don't deserve one, or you're in a dead end job. If you are truly an asset to the company and your management isn't blind, you'll get raises without asking for them. A couple months ago I listened to a co-worker complain about not getting any raises, how hard she worked, and how much she deserved one, knowing already that at the time the wheels were in motion for her to be let go.... for poor job performance.

Just me and my opinion ... I'll use self checkouts when the store start giving me a discount for doing a function of commerce, checking out! I'm paying for someone to check me out in the price of goods; ain't going to do the job for the store so they can garner more profits. Being retired, I got time and social interaction isn't necessarily all bad. Perhaps if people interacted more, there would be more mutual respect and less mental health in society today.

I have found that Wally World can't be bothered to post prices for about 1/2 the inventory, and how can you check it when there is NO clerks anywhere to be found? You're supposed to go to the check out and ask the clerk for a price check, which means standing in line for 20 min to get to the register 'cause they don't have enough registers open!

I can't think of anything I've bought at Walmart that didn't have a price on it or at least the price on the shelf. Stores vary a lot based on local management. Keith

Most people aren’t paying attention at the checkout,,,,,consumer’s and employees
Just having a human ring u thru, doesn’t guarantee mistakes won’t be made
Back in the day,,,,, nothing worse than getting a few miles down the road and learning the stoner gas pump guy filled your diesel with gas
Always filled my own vehicle/checked my own oil

I'm trowing the B.S. flag on Wall-Mart not having prices on 1/2 their inventory. I've never been to a War-Mart without 99% of everything priced. I hear so many people trash War-Mart all the time.....but then I see those same people shopping at Wal-Mart. And when I say something about it they say they are the cheapest around. lol (are you one of them too?)

Wife just texted me about everywhere in town is taking out the the self checkouts because people stole too much. Deal is there not hiring more cashiers or getting more checkouts personally we loves self checkout. Faster, can bag my stuff the way we want and no awkward small talk, same with self service gas stations , there a certain way I want stuff done and I don't like fussing with folks when I can just do it myself, but now back to standing in line for 20min I guess, can't have nothing nice. Good.

The bottom line is what counts, but it's still a PITA to deal with them, not enough workers and the ones they have tend to be arrogant. That said, there's not much I buy anywhere that's not marked down or on sale.

I can’t believe you have never bargained for a higher wage. A lot of managers will “go with the company flow” and most employees will to. I started as an hourly employee at my last corporate job. Gained experience that proved very useful when I moved to a different department. I did a lot outside the scope of my responsibilities and I pointed that out when they came to me with the standard 3%. Refused to accept my performance review. A week later they came to me with 6%. Sometimes you have to be “that person.” I will also note that once I got into management, it wasn’t long before I was labeled a “Renegade” by the management team. lol
