So when I started out thermal hunting I got the Primos Trigger Stick and it worked pretty good but wanted something I could lock my rifle in and shoot. Figured it would improve my shooting.
Found the BOG DeathGrip on sale and got it. Now it weighs a little more than the Primos but I thought it was worth it.
The only issue with the DG is getting level on uneven ground. You can get the legs level and get the gun level until you get to swinging it side to side scanning. I’d have to loosen the clamp holding the rifle which sorta defeated the purpose.
Did some looking and found Little Crow Gunworks that makes a ball head kit for the DG. Got that in today and swapped out the head on the DG and holy cow what a difference. Like night and day difference. Now it doesn’t matter if I’m level or not, with a ball head I’m level 360 degrees around and up and down!!
Now all I need are some targets of opportunity. With this time change and it not getting dark until 9:30pm I haven’t gone out much. Already have to get up at 0545 to go check traps!

Had a couple elk hunters last year with the DeathGrip. Really does make them steady, if they can't find the elk you can take it and put the crosshairs on it and lock it down, then tell them to look through it again. Haha. But it is really only good for sitting in the evenings, when you are watching a spot for them to come out and are set up a couple hours ahead of time. Problem is they want to carry the dang things while walk hunting in the morning. You need to be able to throw your gun up and shoot, you don't have time to be screwing around with shooting sticks, much less one of those BOG contraptions. I can't count the number of elk that have got away because hunters are screwing around with their shooting sticks instead of throwing the gun up and shooting.

Yeah, a tripod like that isn’t something I’d carry elk hunting or really any other type of hunting while stalking/walking.
But, for setting up on stands at night or even sneaking in on hogs at a bait site, they’re worth their weight in gold. Haven’t met anyone yet that can scan for 15-45min and then make a shot freehand.

BOG is a good entry level tripod. I really like using them during spring bear hunting here in Oregon. A lot of times I even set up a second tripod with binos, and it works so well I hardly take out the spotting scope anymore.....
They are a great option for kids as well and takes a lot of the awkwardness out of shooting if they don't have much experience.

Yeeeep the two main complaints I have with mine are the weighs and not having a ball head. Will say though I've kinda alleviated that by just having my gun lower in the vice, leaves me twerk it around a bit

The issue I was having was even when the tripod was level for let’s say out front (gun held in) and you scanned left or right, then the gun (crosshairs) were canted one way or the other and to get it level I’d have to loosen the clamp which sorta defeats the purpose. Now with the ball head and even using the clamp no matter which direction I go, I can get the gun level while still securely clamped in the clamp.
Not everyone may have an issue, I was just passing along what I’ve found and so far with playing with it in the yard, will be a much much nicer setup. Luckily I found the DG on sale and didn’t pay but about $120 for it. Think Scheels had some ridiculous sale going on and I jumped on it. Even with the ball head I have less than a tripod with a ball head would cost. Plus I can still use the clamp or add an ARCA piece to my rifle and take the clamp off and just use the ball head.
May not be feasible for everyone, but if you have the DG it’s a good add on feature that built specifically for the DeathGrip.
