Along with my fascination and interest in snakes, I have the same for lizards (actually, all herpetofauna). So little is actually known. Idaho doesn't even have a good idea of distribution of a lot of species. For the last several years, I've been trying to expand the database. All my thousands of observations go to an Idaho Fish and Game database (Idaho Fish and Wildlife Information Service - IFWIS). I believe most states have a similar set-up.

The northern alligator lizard, Elgaria coerulea, lives in the northern part of the state.

Sagebrush lizards, Sceloporus graciosus, are found scattered where there is sage.

The desert horned lizard, Phrynosoma platyrhinos, is one of three species of horned "toads" living in Idaho.

The young are born alive, and are surely cute little guys.

The western skink, Plestiodon skiltonianus, has an unmistakable electric blue tail, especially the youngsters.

Hope you enjoyed a few lizard pictures.

Jack

Growing up here in Western North Carolina, I never remember seeing lizards in the 80’s? Now we have bluetailed skinks and some type of dryland brown looking lizards. We have always had salamanders. Used to sell them for $6 a dozen.

I have always been jealous of folks who have lizard and salamander populations where they live. Here in Ontario, the only lizard species present is the 5-lined skink and down here where I live their distribution is spotty and you have very little chance of seeing one outside the confines of a provincial or national park. While there are plenty of different salamanders in other parts of Ontario, the only ones we have in the extreme south are mud puppies (which are pretty darn cool but only observable if caught while fishing).
I have heard tell of a secret population of some species of vernal pool dwelling salamanders on private land here but regular folks would never have access.
I have been flipping rotten logs and seining vernal pools for near 45 years now and have never found a salamander in Essex County. Plenty in Kent County just up the 401 highway, but none here.

Just happy to be here.

Just got in. Real nice shots, Jack. I love my gator lizards here. The easiest lizard I’ve ever caught. They aren’t very fast. Not like the racers and skinks and anoles I used to catch in Florida.

I have small spotted salamanders here too. Really like to see those too.

Thank you for the share , Jack.

located is a moving sandhills which was at one time a large miliitay altery range

Thanks, west side. Granted, Idaho is not a particularly good place to seek lizards. Need to get a bit farther south and somewhat warmer climate. However, I still get excited about most any vertebrate. The inverts...not so much.

Jack.

Here is a salamander I caught here near the house. We have a couple more varieties as well.

A few years ago I came across a northern alligator lizard here in an old lumber pile on the farm. I had never seen one before and was pretty excited. I don't think western Oregon's climate is all that good for the critters. Thanks for sharing Gulo.
