Our Australian shepherd is chewing on his foot. Took him to the vet. They didn't find anything wrong SO $265 later he now has chewed it bare between his two toes.
He doesn't appear to be in pain now but he doesn't want anyone messing with it.
Anyone have a dog doing this? How should I help him.
I'm thinking of putting something on the foot so he won't chew but don't know what to use.
Any help appreciated
just

Is he chewing, or is it a lick sore? Chewing of the foot is usually in response to a foreign body like glass or a thorn. There should be an infected area with an encysted foreign body. Removing the foreign body and cleaning the wound stops this.

Lick sores are often from separation anxiety. Having a second dog to interact with, usually stops this behavior.

Try dressing it with bag balm. If needed you could try an old sock over that.

Licking can be from allergies, pain, boredom or a combination. How old is the dog? You can always wipe off the paws with a wet rag after coming from outdoors. To try and remove allergens. If he starts licking or scratching elsewhere I would say it’s allergies. If he is fixed on one spot it may be mental because licking causes him to release endorphins that make him feel good and it soon becomes just a bad habit. He may need a drug like amitriptyline to break the cycle

But anything you can do to add mental and physical enrichment would help

Thanks guys. We just had another look. Looks like something swollen between his toes. Absess?
Its pink not red. He is an outside dog. Comes in the house often though. Farm dog.
Wife looked it up on her phone.
Its an inter digital cyst.
looks like another visit to the vet.

.

Licking and biting at the feet is an allergy. Apoquel will do the trick. It is expensive, one pill a day

Apoquel is a blessing. In the old days we just used steroids long term which led to side effects . Don’t think it’ll help with an interdigital cyst. Unless the cyst is secondary to the allergy and inflammation.

I have to preach mental enrichment because my boneheaded clients think it’s acceptable to keep a dog crated for 16-20 hours in a 48 hour period.

If they’ve gotta keep a dog in a crate then they got no business owning a dog.
Just my opinion.

You’d be surprised at the ignorance. Too much “entitlement” to own a pet without enough investment towards a living being

I get what you’re saying.
I’m a dog guy. I’ve own coonhounds, beagles, and labs for 48 years. I grew up with dogs, but they had to have a purpose. I can pet a good hunting dog just as easy as a biscuit eater.
People are enamored with their pets, that’s for sure.
