Thinking about doing a Yellowstone trip with the family. It seems like the campgrounds fill up fast. Any tips on getting a campsite?

It says to have a backup plan but area hotels are crazy expensive.

Few years ago we stayed in Cody and drove the 50 miles or so to Yellowstone each day. Saw just as many animals on the drive to the park as we saw in it. Don't miss Bill Cody museum in Cody. Thought we would spend an hour in there, spent all day and part of another. Neat stuff in it.

Consider the Idaho side too.

Three years ago our family of 5 spent 7 days camping in Yellowstone (tents) then 3 days in Grand Tetons. We reserved our site six months in advance. Are you thinking about this summer? Most all the sites we saw were reserved. You can probably just show up and find a site here and there but we didn't want to take the chance of spending a day trying to find where we were going to stay if they were filled up or one site maybe open for two nights then you have to move to another one. How long are you planning on being there? That is my only time there but thoroughly researched and planned everything so I can help

There are quite a few free spots to camp if you do your homework. I stay at Tom Miner camp sites for free when there. I have posted a few that you could check out. You can always squeeze in if just a tent and not a motor home.

I was thinking next summer and probably stay for 5 or 6 days. In addition to that, it will take two days each way for travel. I’m thinking about using a wall tent so I don’t want to be moving once it’s up. I really don’t want to take it down till we head home.

If you stay at a remote site, is there any place to shower?

If you go check out West Yellowstone in Montana, Idaho border There is a pizza joint next to the grocery store that is maybe the best pizza I have ever had. I want to go back just for the pizza, might be worth the 14 drive. Looking if I go to the nationals I could hit it on the way and back. There is camping north of Yellowstone along the Madison river. Also just out of the park around Grand Teton park I have camped.

Three of the ones I posted have showers and bathrooms. If no showers there will be bathrooms and they are by a live crick so you can bath in the crick bring trunks and soap etc.

Stay 6 days. We camped at Canyon Village. Reserve your spot. We went first two weeks of June. Our trip:
Day 1: Corn Palace in Mitchel, SD
2: Badlands to Black hills
3: Mt Rushmore and Black Hills
4. Devils Tower to Lovell
5. Wal-Mart in Cody (do me a favor and stop by "Jeremiah Johnsons" grave, I knew he was buried there, never came across my mind during planning, remembered when got home) Stopped to see various wildlife and thermal attractions on way to Canyon Village
One day was Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring Area
Another was Thumb Geyser, Natural Bridge hike, and Fishing Bridge area
Another Gibbon Falls and west Yellowstone
Another Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
Another Norris Basin and back to Grand Prismatic
Another Mammoth Hot Springs and area
Last = sites on way out to Grand Tetons
If you can manage the dates it is worth going to Grand Tetons for 3 days (Jackson, Jenny Lake, Jackson Lake). We stayed in a tent cabin there.
We took others advice and were at our first site at 8-8:30. By 11 things start getting busy. We took/cooked all of our food. Breakfast something real simple, lunch sandwich type stuff on the road some where, dinner at camp.

Keep in mind there are grizzly if you are tent camping.
We stayed at a campground in Jellystone years ago. Had to reserve a year in advance and there was 500 campsites in one campground all on pavement. Do your research!

^^^^yep , there are grizz up that way. Some campgrounds will require a hard sided camper in grizz areas.

Unless they have diff regs you can just disperse camp on the NF just about anywhere outside of the park.

June has less tourists usually.

The ones that mentioned and stayed at many times you can pitch a tent. No hard shell that we have ever run across of. Any place on NF you can camp for free.

You can camp on the public lands outside of the park. The campgrounds charge a fee but you can go a couple miles beyond them and pretty much camp wherever you want for nothing.
