Found this little guy hanging out at the fire pit. The wife was sitting out there 3 feet away for about 15 minutes and never saw it. I came out there to build a fire and almost grabbed it thinking it was a piece of wood. All of the copperheads I've ever seen were at lakes and streams. We were on top off a mountain. I've never seen one there. This little guy was about 18" long, just a little bugger. Kinda cute really. I chased him back into the oaks with a stick.

I didn't know copperheads were that far north.

Hope not doing as the Bible says doesn’t “bite” you on your ankle. If you use the firepit at night much next encounter might not be a good one

I live in South Central Pa. and all we have ever done with a copperhead is cut off its tail--about 2 inches back of its head.

Same here. 2" maximum, I shoot for more like .5" > 1".

I don't tolerate anything venomous around a homestead or even far away barns that people will be in and out of. Red wasps, yellow jackets, fire ants, scorpions, and venomous snakes all get kilt on sight.

Guess I never understood the thought process of killing snakes. Somebody explain it to me. I've spent a lifetime around venomous snakes and never been bit yet. Why kill 'em? If they're in my yard or chicken coop, doing damage, then I take care of 'em. This post will surely anger a few folks.

I remove the venomous species with prejudice if they're found somewhere that I will return to on a regular basis.

Yeah, I don’t like killing snakes but will kill venomous snakes on the Planatation or my yard. I will catch nonvenomous snakes and put them in my wife’s flower beds. I think they keep the venomous snakes and pests out and do serve a purpose.

I don't see the point of killing them. They are good at keeping the rodent population down. Copperheads are a little worse than a bee sting anyway. Not that I want to be bitten by one. If it was a rattler in the yard or around my home, that may be a different issue. This little guy wasn't bugging anyone, and it's not my property anyway. This was in the state forest where we were camping.

… 2 weeks before dad could walk without crutches… quite a bit worse than a bee sting

I've never intentionally killed a snake. I've accidentally killed some mowing. I've only handled one copperhead. It was aggressive once it woke up. It almost got me because I didn't know they could put the fangs out of the side of their mouths.

If I found a copperhead in an area I, or people I care about, frequented, I would try to relocate it far away and kill it if I couldn't. It's life isn't worth the risk to me of having it around.

Keith
