I went for a drive this week and tried one of my usual roads but I was the first down it this year. I had to stop and cut out a big blowdown . I finished it and a couple hundred yards down the road was another even bigger so I turned around and tried another road. My question is when this happens to you do you do as little as possible when you cut out the road or do you try to do a good job and make it easy for the next guy. It seems so many people here do as little as possible. If you take a couple more blocks off everybody can get easily by. The next time down the road if someone else hasn't cut out the tree I will get it and drive to the next, it is on the way to one of my best berry spots. Hopefully someone younger than me will get the big one.

When we moose hunt in Ontario we see lots of that we cut the path open and 5 days later tons of people are hunting very close to you as soon as someone else does work everyone take advantage of it

I clear the road. If i know its gonna be bad Ill have my chainsaw and if its a fun surprise I always have an axe and 40” crosscut in the truck that I can use solo or put a handle on for two man’n. I don’t understand how people can so poorly clear roads. Some care and some don’t

Maintaining bush trails and old roads is a non stop activity.
There are always trees to cut that come down across the trails
If you havent been into the line for a couple months there will be lots of work to do.
I dont go trapping without an axe and saw.Even the Camp trails need work all the time and those are the trails that get used the most.
Hunters that hunt on my traplines help maintain the trails they use and maintain bike bridges etc,and fill mudholes with corduroy. But most of the work is mine because I am over my lines and trails year round for the most part (doing mtc)moose hunters are only in the bush for a couple weeks in early fall.

I cut out blow downs on roads where I hunt to MY satisfaction. If the next guy is fine with the way they are then he can come hunt beside me. If he doesn’t like it he can either do more or turn around, I don’t care.

Depends on how much of a hurry I'm in at that time.
And I'm usually in a hurry.

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

You have to remember that 1 out of 3 Democratic Voters is just as dumb as the other two.

I agree with Okforester clear enough for your satisfaction to get past otherwise every Tom dick and Harry will be beside you when you are looking for peace and solitude or picking the honey hole berries.
Learned that through several previous years trips.

This wasn't a deadend road but a road a lot of people use when out for a drive. I realize I am in an area of the country unlike most of the rest with miles upon miles of state and federal land open to everyone. If one spot is being used you move down the road to the next. The majority of people won't drive down the roads I drive or walk more than a couple hundred yards from the road. I just believe I can take an extra minute to cut one more block so that if we have snow or ice and you slide sideways a foot you aren't hung up on a log you can't get off of. It really could be life threatening in bad weather.

Nothing like that around here

I am with the "cut it out to satisfy you" crowd.

And on public land you are inviting more of the lazy folks to get in where you like to get away

I don't clear anything. I like to walk those "roads" for grouse hunting. If I clear them every drunk on a utv or beater truck will be driving them and shooting the grouse off the roads.

My favorite is when a big boulder "accidentally" rolls in the way.

If it’s on my trail I leave it until after deer season to keep the city hunters out, but 80% of my trail isn’t accessible until freeze up anyway…..but they try….lol
On the fire guards I’ll usually buck the thing up and toss it in the back, if I got the time.

it's a double edged knife , if I don't clear it dad can't drive back to access the swamp stands

if I do , it is a public easement and the whole world uses it.

some times if there is a smaller one I can push out of the way then put back I will do that so that it keeps the real lazy folks out.

I try and take a chainsaw any time I am headed to a place in the woods.
this spring I had my saw with when we moved my aunt back into her house , it wasn't blocking anything but she would sit and worry about that big limb in the way of mowing so with good saw it takes 10-15 minutes to buck up a large limb from the beach that broke off in the wind storm a couple weeks earlier , that had the entire area without power for days.

I guess another question is do you put on your saw chaps before you cut that down tree out of the trail ?

I do some times and I don't sometimes I should always.
if your that far in that you are cutting down trees off the trail , a slip would mean no help is likely to get there before you bleed out.
and yet at the same time your like but it is just a few cuts it will take almost as long to chap up as make the cuts.
but smart move is chap up and avoid the injury or make it less worse.
