Reading some old trapping books lately...right now I'm on one about EJ Daily. One of the things that I noticed is how often the trappers of that bygone era found sets as opposed to constructing sets. Trails, stumps with holes around them, hollow trees, and actual dens, crossing logs and so on. Sure they used dirt holes, mainly for fox, but they mostly just set where the animals already were traveling. It's so much easier to teach someone how to make a set then how to learn animals habits and make sets that might take a little construction, but are mostly created by nature and animals movements.
But often the natural sets are better producers.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

What part of the country did he trap?

Kinda depends on your style of trapping, too. Most of my line is constructed sets in the ROW, pocket sets and more pocket sets. But I won't pass up those "natural" places if they are handy and not too time consuming to set.

Lore salesman can't make as much from natural blind sets.
Early on in here I was told by several "regulars" a lured dirt hole
was better than crossing set.
I learned a bunch right there.

Definitely some gems in the old books.

Got to have natural crossings to be able to set them as well. Different parts of the country have different terrain features or lack thereof. Hence my question, where’d he trap? Some of y’all post coon trails, coyote crossings, etc…good luck finding that down here. I just have to go by what cameras show me or make a guess and set whatever intersections (roads) I think they’ll travel. Lures and baits are definitely needed. If a track or scat is found, you set it with lure/bait and hope he comes back through.

EJ mainly trapped the Adirondacks.

I like to build sets way before season and let them turn natural..

Such as move a hollow log to where I want it. Or plant a clump of grass as soon as farmers harvested crops for the year.. plant a white rock as a post on a trail corner...

Good post skinner, it would be nice to see more posts like this one.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

He also trapped near his home, Lisbon, NY. St Lawrence County. More farmland than the Adirondacks.
