Doing a little coyote control work this summer. Historically I have not been that successful in 100 deg + heat. Well this year I changed up a few things and I’ve noticed a significant difference in my catch rate. At this time I just have not had a lot of success with gland lure in the summer. I know a lot of guys really hammer the coyotes in the summer on it but for whatever reason I just don’t have that much success with it.

I started using a high quality liquid mouse bait and another liquid bait I made and good quality coyote and red fox urine. I really started seeing success immediately. I’m going almost exclusively with flat sets as well. Ants really don’t bother the liquid bait at all. It soaks in the ground and there’s nothing for them to eat. So life’s good right now. Even picked up a couple of big Tom bobcats as well.

If anyone would like to share their summer techniques please feel free. I love trying new things but the old standby advice of setting right on top of sign can not be stressed enough. It is by far the most important of all!!

Targeting adults “in their bedroom” is tough, if not near impossible. Anytime anyone says just set a bunch of traps around a den site and catch em all, I laugh. If I screw around within a 1/2 mile of a den with out at least getting the female eliminated, they will be gone the next day. They might not move far, but they will move and the adults will be extra alert.



I run a LOT of blind trail sets in summer. No smells of any type.

I’m extra careful about scent and human intrusion this time of year, and I don’t care what anyone says, it DOES make a difference.

Boone, when you say subtle I think about pounding of a hammer driving stakes in...noisy. The little predation work I do every year for my cattle guys I prefer to use flat sets and use a long chain with grapple. Entangle the grapple aka pre-hook it and use a flat set. Coon are the biggest issue around here.... ruining a good flat set.

So how do you know where to make a blind set? Or you with those guys that have actual trails?

Because we trap for management purposes. People pay in certain parts of the country to have predators removed.

All adult males big and old with one old female and even the bobcats I caught are old worriers. My sets are extremely blended flat sets. Most with no backing or very little.

I do work for a couple of ranches that are high end deer operations.

I was referencing set types.

But minimizing all human intrusion as much as possible is always good too.

But big flashy dirt holes, “loud” looking (and smelling) sets rarely get me many adult summer coyotes.

No, get into the end of July and August when those pups are truly starting to get out a bit, and it’s different. They’re suckers for fresh holes, bones, staked hides, etc.

Summer trapping is no fun.

Here is the route I have been taking this summer.I collect some table scraps and some used cooking oil and go out to an area with coyote sign and dig a hole with a post hole digger about a foot deep .mix some oil with the scraps once you drop a good bit of slop in the hole add some oil on top to cover it. I feel that the more oil on it keeps the ants at bay longer. Non targets have not been an issue for me with this.I will go back about a week later if they hit it you can tell they will blow it out. I will refill the hole again using the same process. If I intend on setting a trap I will put a smaller amount of bait still covering with oil.Basically I am pre baiting. My trapping time is basically set Friday night and pick up Sunday morning so I need Every advantage I can get.

I just can't get into it in the summer. As much as I love trapping, the heat, bugs, and humidity takes the fun out of it to me.

I hang my traps up around March or April and usually set a few in September and October before I start deer hunting and then get into it the hardest when deer season winds down.

All my places are with 15 minutes of my house. It’s not as “fun” as winter trapping, but it pays the same. Been a lot easier using drags vs trying to pound an anchor in cement. Plus with these rainy nights I’m picking up coons and possums.

Pays more than fur trapping. If your not making more than fur trapping you are not charging enough.
