Hay wannabe and yall other thermal guys.
So I talked about these lil thermal deal a lot of guys have been using in there phones in conjunction with NV. Apparently a lot of folks don't like shooting under thermal but also don want to drop $1500+ on a scanner. Whatever. Anyhow said id post more info what I met up with one of the shore tankerman who uses one and sure enough met him back today.

That’s very cool! any idea how far you can see with one? I check a lot of traps in the dark and that would be pretty convenient if I could check some from the road with that thing

He showed me some vioes and you can see coon sized heat signatures really easy at base magnification @175yd

Just read some reviews. It a pretty cool unit. Not sure how it would do on a stand though, unless I could figure some way to carry it to and from. Already have rifle, caller, and tripod, with the caller remote generally around my neck while on stand.
It would be pretty cool checking sets in the dark or even trying to locate downed game. Heck I could almost hang it out the window and drive with it and spotting fields.
Think I’ll create an envelope for it and start adding some money.

Need that for my bird feeder robbers , I could get a better line on them, they tore another down last night !!

Animals thru a cell phone camera at any distance are not very noticeable during the daylight. So I would assume any small animal like a raccoon would be hard to identify with a thermal other than a white spot, imo.

Using a cell phone camera creates extra light on you at night. If your goal is to use thermal or night vision to avoid lights to be detected, that isn’t your best option. I just upgraded to a newer scanner with 384 image. Nothing wrong with my original, was inexpensive($500 for a 160 ATN scanner used the last 2 years). Worked good enough to get me on gun. I could tell the difference in size of deer vs coyote at 200 yards plus. I can connect to my scope with my phone on stand but it’s too much light. Last thing I want is attention at me unless I’m howling/using mouth calls. I want the attention on the e-call/decoy.

You didn’t read about it did you? Supposedly had some ninja setting where it doesn’t show the light, just the heat signature.
This is something to just scan. Heck all my scopes produce light back in my face. I don’t think it would be used for long while hunting. If I catch heat I’m going to the gun.

No I didn’t look at the description. I know exactly what you mean with your scope shining light back on you. I have my brightness adjusted to limit that light, my gun is on my tripod slightly angled up so that light shines down, I use the eye cup, as that directs that light more, and also put in sleep mode until ready to shoot. My preference would be a handheld scanner over something attached to my phone but to each their own. Will it work as a scanner, sure, would I use that, yes if that’s what I could afford. Infiray seems to make a good product. I spend a lot more time behind a scanner than my scope. Any scanner is better than none.

Haha, I always try to still use cover at night and I was set up under a big pine and went out to set up my caller. I looked back and there was a “spotlight” on that pine!! I then started angling mine down as well!
I was using my AGM as a scanner and now it’s on the SFAR. I don’t mind using my rifle as a scanner while it on the tripod, but it does get tiresome 30min into a stand.

When we could only run lights here, I tried scanning with my gun light at first. Went to a head lamp or hand held light and made life easier. I like a smaller handheld scanner, use a lanyard around my neck so I can let go and be on gun or keep scanning if I have other shooters, keep track of multiple coyote. We usually sit edges of cover but if conditions are right, I’ll set up middle of a field to keep wind in my favor. I’ve heard of some guys using there Rattlers as scanners then clipping on rail to shoot. I like to avoid extra moving parts, especially at night. I’ve seen some really cool thermal devices for hunting and in the industrial field, and constantly getting better.

Dark Night Outdoors makes an eyepiece that has a shutter in it that opens when you press your eye against it and closes when you don't.

I think they make them that will fit other thermal scope brands and sizes.

I may have to get one of those eye cups, they make one for my scope

The only issue with that that I could think of might be recoil and getting on a second target quickly.
