I’m still confused about the Union guys. So basically your a temp for the Union? The Union pimps out whatever the companies need? So what’s the advantage of working for the Union vs a company that has Union workers? Y’all getting the shaft, lol. So who pays for insurance? Raises? And y’all pay into the Union??
Yeah this is a first for me, never heard anything like that except Coonman talking about working for that temp agency that farms out workers when needed. The difference between temp agencies and tradesman unions is the union folks are WELL compensated in the form of hourly wage, health insurance, pension, and OT over 40 or if you work a holiday (probably double time on a holiday in some cases). Way different deal than public sector or factory worker unions in most cases. Happy trapping! ScottW

I’ll make it simple…if you’ve missed school functions, firsts, birthdays, holidays, etc, then you’ve put your job above you family and work too much. It's a good thing some people do. Otherwise we wouldn't have over the road semi drivers, airline pilots, train engineers and the list goes on ALL of the ones you named are monitored and CANT work 80-100 hrs per week. When they work holidays and weekends they are forced to be off during the week So that’s a bad example

I’ll be honest…I think it’s just male mentality to provide for our families. We’ve all been there and if I hadn’t seen a man broken beyond anything I’d ever seen over the regret of missing so much I might’ve turned out the same. Men want to provide a better life for our families and it’s easy to justify, but we miss so much. I’ve never met anyone who lost a loved one that would rather have money than one more day with that person. I think it’s just a decision we have to make and I’ve preached to my boys. Work like a madman while you’re young and single, but when that wife and later a child comes along, that is your priority. You can still work OT or extra jobs, but never volunteer to work if it’s going to cause you to miss life’s moments. I don't get any paid time off but am only scheduled to work 14 days out of 28 so can be off usually if i need to be. Even if im scheduled and i need off i hav 4 weeks vacation. If that wont work i will just call in. . We Also home school and I have my scheduled days I'm working a few years in advance so most every can be scheduled around my job. Wait wait 4 weeks vacation? I’m betting it’s paid or it’s not vacation!! You can draw unemployment so yes it’s paid.

J bird, I'm doing it all at the same time paying everything off, building savings and investing.. Biggest part of my investing is going into retirement accounts. 23k maxes out the 401 7 k in the Roth. Another 12 k backdoor into the Roth a year. If I wait I can't go back in time and hit the limits for years past.
It may not make since infact I have 3x as much in the bank as I have outstanding total debt. I could pay it all off today. But I like having enough cash available in an emergency fund so I can cover my bills for a year if I have no money coming in. Unless you are hundreds of thousands in debt this is ludicrous!! You do know if something happened you can get a one time medical exemption for funds in one of those accounts ?! If you have worked for 5 plus years at the numbers above you are covered. 36,000 for 5 years amount won’t cover you fir a year? I rest my case !

For all those that think I blow off family for work well here is how it typically goes.
Today My wife asked if I was coming home from work on Tuesday morning when I get off or if I was planning on working. I'm scheduled off Tues, Wensday and Thursday.
I just said not now what's going on. It's fair week and I'm needed to help with it so that's that. Yes I work a lot but the second I know something is going on days off or scheduled to work doesn't matter I won't be at work. it's your life, man...you do you. but being "available" isn't the same thing as being "present". sometimes (MANY times!) it's the very small things (a knowing glance, a sly smile, etc.) that grow and secure those ties that bind. Good luck, my Friend!
