I have a friend that is interested in buying 1 or more live traps for coon. He continually has coon problems. He doesn't feel comfortable using Have-A-Heart type traps. I have set my traps there on several occasions and they are either Williams or Darren Peel Traps. I understand that Bill WIlliams passed away about a year ago, and his traps are no longer in production. I have one of Darren Peel's traps and feel they are quite comparable to WIlliam's, but can't find a web page for his, if he is still manufacturing them.
So, if anyone can shed any light on either trap manufacturer and/or a web page. I believe Volke (??) has gone out of business too. My friend would like to see what they have to offer.
Thank you,
Garry-

If he only wants one or two........then Tomahawk. Think of it as being like a Hav-a-heart that is built like a tank. No coon is getting out of one of those. https://www.livetrap.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=29787I use the cage wire floor to help meter out the bait. Make a trail from just outside the door to the back of the trap. The jackpot is still on the floor, mixed in the cage wire.......just past the step trigger.

I just got a Duke heavy duty so far working well , works and looks a lot like the Freedom yotetrapper30 posted but without the bait door
run a long stake through it so that they can't roll it over , gravity door type
for bait in cages I use old soup cans put the bait in , toss it to the back and set it , makes them work for the bait a little making a better chance the step on the pedal.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

TSC has them fairly inexpensive. I have 4 and have caught quite a few coons. A big coon will negatively alter or destroy a TSC trap in a night or at least that is my experience.

Thanks guys... my friend friend/cousin lives in Illinois and has illness in the family so won't make the trip to Ohio. He doesn't know anything about trapping and I was trying to help him out with his critter problems. I don't like the Have-A-Heart style type trap when you are going to release animals alive. They are sufficient in most cases when you are going to dispatch the critter in the cage, but not very handy when a person has no experience with either the traps or the critter in the trap.
The WIlliams style of trap is King when it comes to live traps, when live release in concerned.
Will check back with you "newtoga"... if and when cuz gets here.

If easy release is the concern, then traps with gravity doors are the way to go. just roll it upside down and the door falls open. The downside to that is if the animal rolls the cage over, the door opens and they walk out. So traps with gravity doors MUST BE staked down. Cannot be rolled.
In addition to others, Wickenkamp out of Iowa makes a good trap. The standard is good enough. Openings large enough for coon to reach thru to grab onto stuff, but large enough to poke a 22 barrel thru.
