Hay boss your the forum guru on smoke poles this so question. Back in the black powder muzzle loader days if someone wanted like the top end of precision out of a muzzleloader , what we'd call a precision/target/varmit rifle I guess , what would be like the type of class they would go for ? What there a class or category like that or was it all very custom one off deals of some wanted something like that ? I know the swiss I think had Thai shutchezen (?) ones but didn't know if there where anymore and if anyone would it would probably be you

Target shooting goes way back in the US. Purpose built target muzzleloader with better sights were mainly after the introduction of percussion ignition. Look up chunk guns and over the log matches. Never really died out as witness the matches Alvin York participated in up to world war one. Then along came the NMLRA which still has national championships twice a year.
As cartridge guns became popular, target shooters still thought that the most accurate bullets had to be loaded from the muzzle with a false muzzle and paper patched bullets followed by a breech loaded cartridge loaded only with powder and a wad.

Yep, coonlove summed it up. Chunk guns were the target guns of the early 19th century. Very, very heavy barrels. Peep sights were common on them.

Not really my area of expertise though. Minute of squirrel is accurate enough for me.
