Since jewelweed is starting to bloom I figured it would be a good time to do a video on it. This is a great native annual and also a great treatment for a poison ivy rash, bug bites and other skin irritations.

A neat plant, I use to bite the back of the flower where the nectar is!

I let some grow along the edge of my yard on purpose.

Lots of people never heard of it and I do a show and tell with it.

We always called them “ Touch me nots” as a kid. I put some on some poison ivy the other day and was impressed.

For the bee folks---its a good nectar source. One of the minor ones here as it doesnt cover the acreage needed for making a crop. In this area it generally is August bloomer. About 400 miles from me to mid-KY and following the old timers math there's a week difference per hundred miles north/south so would make sense its opening down there. The importance for it here is that it hits in a period of time before what is the typical fall flow so it can make a little surplus or be converted to brood prior to the final push for the year. It also usually occupies the woody/shady fringes which is slightly different ground than the wide open typical bee forage so it provides an alternative source which can also be important on some years depending on weather, etc

It tends to bloom from the end of June-ish until the frost kills it here in KY. Right now is our slow time for blooming plants - unless you have a good stand of natives. Cup plant and mountain mint start up this time of year and carry through until the goldenrods really start to go in August.
