Is that a normal occurrence? Shoot them in the head ? 243 Winchester ? Good for you and family !

Whales in the delta are becoming more normal. Seems to be a pod or to every year now. These ones were early. It's usually late summer when they show up.

I did not hear you say it was because of climate change. laugh

I have no idea if it's from climate change. It may be just because we don't have barges like we used to and a lot of freight is brought over in smaller boats on a more regular basis. So there is more opportunities for people to see them. But the lack of barges could be from low water which could be from climate change. It's a vicious circle.

Whales seem to come into the delta after a storm surge. I Wouldnt be surprised if a few get stuck in landlocked lakes as well once the water drops.

If you take care of the land the land will take care of you

had a good talk with a whale bio from DFO, Winnipeg about this, glad you are harvesting some.

Worked at a old oat mill 5 story high that had 300+ feet of 12 inch wide leather made at the turn of the century, most of it's leather was from Belugas made back in the day. The replaced cow leather was always where it separated. The two leathers smelt different when sanded so you could tell.

I'm having a hard time figuring how you would get leather from whale skin. It's just not the same as land mammal skin.
Google says "beluga leather" comes from a French calf.

Thanks martentrapper , I could only imagine how many calves went into making that belt and it was thick as your pinky.
